Central York Fire Services is a full-time consolidated fire service providing excellent public education, fire prevention, and emergency fire services to the residents of Aurora and Newmarket. These two vibrant communities are protected by a fire service that is able to respond effectively and competently to a wide range of emergencies and hazards, through our Mission: To serve with professionalism, honour and integrity.

Central York Fire Services serves a combined population of approximately 150,000 and covers an area of +0 square kilometres. The department responds to approximately 5000 emergency calls each year; operating out of five fire stations, three in Aurora and two in Newmarket. With a full-time department of 154 staff, Central York Fire Services is proud to offer a high level of leadership, opportunities for professional development and the chance to contribute to two of the most dynamic and livable communities in Canada.

Under the direction of the Assistant Deputy Chief, the Training Officer is responsible for developing, preparing, delivering, evaluating and monitoring training programs for CYFS staff. The Training Officers are integral for the implementation of approved training programs and working with the shift instructors on a wide variety of topics to ensure all front-line staff meet the job requirements. The Training Division coordinates Fire College courses, identifies appropriate off-site training courses for staff to attend and develops and develops in-service training programs. They are responsible to coordinate shift instructors on the delivery of training material and procedures to frontline staff. These duties include managing some specialized equipment, involvement in equipment research and procurement, participate in recruit selection and promotional examinations as required.

Job Requirements
Qualifications:
Certified NFPA 1041 - Fire Service Instructor Level I with ability to achieve Level II within 1 year.
Demonstrated commitment in ongoing skill development, training programs, and self-directed learning to stay on top of emerging trends and challenges.
Demonstrate capability in organizing, coordinating, developing, delivering, evaluating, monitoring and recording effective fire service training programs and materials.
Be able to perform all of the duties of a suppression firefighter as required.
Instruct/demonstrate and participate in areas of specialized rescue training.
Prepare and deliver training in a variety of styles, e.g. lectures interactive sessions and demonstrations.
Utilize knowledge of various teaching techniques and methods, including creating lesson plans, guide sheets and use of variety of teaching aids.
Assess and evaluate learning outcomes
Demonstrate strong leadership and motivational skills and proven good judgment.
Demonstrate excellent mechanical aptitude.
Proficiently use computer including MS Office, Internet, and fire department management software (Firehouse), etc.
Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal, excellent presentation, organization skills, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Be able to work independently as well as in a team.
Demonstrate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all equipment and apparatus, as well as policies, procedures and guidelines of the Fire Department
Research and evaluate Fire Department policies, operating guidelines, techniques and equipment
Perform administrative duties
Must have no criminal record unless a pardon has been granted under the Criminal Record Act of Canada and has not been revoked.
Possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class "D" with "Z" endorsement.
Be available to work Monday-Friday, day shift and be flexible to changes to hours of work including vacation schedule, and evenings and weekends when required. Read more
