Key responsibilities:
ü Completes a head to toe physical assessment and a social assessment of the patient upon admission.
ü Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy, non-invasive blood pressure, and oximetry. Start/or evaluate IV site. Evaluate existing drainage systems in place.
ü Develop a written Care Plan upon admission and review and update it daily.
ü Recognize cardiac arrhythmia’s. Intervene using physician orders, ACLS Algorithm, or ICU standing orders.
ü Re-assess patient to identify progress and trends that require intervention or reporting to the physician.
ü Operate equipment: IV pump, PCA pump, Kangaroo pump, Cardiac Monitors (both room and central). Pacemaker, Ventilator, Bi-Pap, Pressure Modules, (Arterial line and Swan Ganz), Blanketrol cooling/warming unit, Lifepak 8, Microcron Air Purifier, Doppler, Temperature probes, and use and management of Blakemore tubes.
ü Provide routine patient care. Perform blood draw from an arterial and central line. Obtain readings from pulmonary catheter (wedged and non-wedged). Interpret computerized monitor trends.
ü Monitor telemetry from the Med/Surg desk when there are no patients in ICU. Orient to the Med/Surg desk duties according to the orientation form and assist accordingly. When ICU is open the monitoring of telemetry is done from ICU.
ü Administer medications, calculate doses and maintain current knowledge of medications.
ü Assess the patient’s learning needs. Educate the patient and family.
ü Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
ü Follow the standard for infection control; hand washing, protective eyewear, mask, gown, gloves, head cover, and shoe cover, as appropriate. Proper disposal of contaminated items and the use of isolation.
ü Participate in monthly outdating of medications and supplies, checking of crash cart, hemodynamic cart, chest tube cart, and trach box. Check, order and stock supplies according to par level.
ü Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation. Post monitor strips per policy.
ü Complete patient charges daily enter orders into the computer.
ü Participate in chart review. Collects data for QI.
ü Attend mandatory yearly education day, monthly mandatory staff meetings, and mandatory in-service. Enhance professional growth by attending educational opportunities pertaining to ICU nursing, maintain BLS yearly and ACLS every two years. Encouraged to attain specialty certification for critical care nursing.
ü Initiate and coordinate a Code Blue.
ü Behave in a professional manner and maintain good interpersonal relationships with other staff, departments, manager, and physicians.
ü Participate in orientation of new ICU staff. Provide nursing students with opportunities to observe and learn.
ü Float to Med/Surg or other units to take assignments as requested and qualified.
ü Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
ü Check inventory of all equipment, crash cart and instruments as per the inventory register and inform the Ward In-Charge / Nursing Supervisor in case of any discrepancies noted check the communication book for any new instructions during every shift.
