This position supports CDPH's mission and strategic plan by providing public health laboratory testing support for mycobacterial, mycotic, parasitic, and immunodiagnostic diseases. Job Summary: The Public Health Laboratory Technician (PHLT) I (Microbiology) assists with microbiological laboratory work by processing and preparing specimens for examination by microbiologists; preparing media and reagents; performing quality control checks on equipment, media, and reagents; and maintaining a neat, clean, and organized work environment.
The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Microbiological Sciences) of the Mycobacterial Parasitic Diseases Reference Unit.
Working Conditions:
This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH's Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200.
Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

CDPH's Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) Program provides reference, diagnostic and applied research testing, and consultation for a variety of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases of public health importance.
The MDL also serves as the State's Laboratory Response Network (LRN) reference laboratory for biothreat testing and coordination of preparedness activities, and trains local public health laboratory personnel in state-of-the-art standardized laboratory procedures.
