Job Description
This is an opportunity to join the government’s law firm – the Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice.
Legal
Services lawyers advise and represent the Government of Nova Scotia, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions on a broad range of legal and public policy issues. The position is a term, full‑time role on the Solicitor Services team, specifically within the Resources, Regulatory Enforcement and Real Property Team, advising Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Natural Resources, Public Works and Housing, and various Crown corporations and agencies.
Primary Accountabilities
Advise Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors and other senior leaders on matters of law, negotiation, strategy and public policy.
Draft and interpret statutes, regulations and contracts.
Assist with submissions to Cabinet.
Present information about government and law to the public generally or as part of a consultation process for public policy development.
Serve on project teams with senior and policy staff of client departments.
Qualifications and Experience
Practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (or eligible for membership), in good standing.
Minimum of 3 years of legal experience.
Assets
Experience advising government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards and commissions and other public sector entities.
Experience in agriculture and food law.
Experience with commercial transactions.
Experience in real property (successful completion of the Land Registration Act Qualification Assessment).
Experience in construction law.
Working Conditions
Physical Effort Includes:
Sitting at a computer for long periods of time.
Sensory Attention Includes
Review voluminous written material, write, think conceptually and strategically.
Lead and participate in meetings with senior and intermediate government staff and external partners, in‑person and virtually.
Long periods of mental focus and strong memory.
Handle adversarial people in ways that de‑escalate and build insight.
Mental Pressure Includes
Handle pressure situations, multiple deadlines and competing demands.
Maintain composure in hostile situations and focus on relevant information.
Occasional overtime may be required.

Salary Range: $3,639.93 – $7,385.75 bi‑weekly
