Ways to Work is the borough's largest employment support programme, delivered by the council and working with all local partners to deliver sustainable employment, education and training outcomes for local residents.

It is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and has registered and worked with over 6000 residents since its inception in 2016, helping over 3000 people into employment, training and education.

Our Ways to Work centres in St Helens and Earlestown enable the co-location of council staff with key strategic local partners, in highly visible and accessible locations, allowing staff from St Helens Borough Council's Ways to Work programme to work alongside career coaches from Career Connect and Jobcentre Plus advisers to offer mentoring, coaching, advice and guidance, and job search support.

Working St Helens Council’s UKSPF funded ‘Ways to Work’ Programme, which aims to improve employment outcomes within the Borough.


You will coach a referred caseload of people, both on a one-to-one basis and within groups as appropriate, to facilitate the in making changes that result in them participating positively in education, training or employment. You will provide a supportive and motivating environment for people to explore their needs, motivations, desires and skills and assist the individual in making real, lasting change focused ultimately on moving into sustainable employment.


You will have the skills and professional track record to creatively apply tools and techniques which may include one-to-one training, facilitating, mentoring, counselling and networking to support the young person to meet their participation and employment goal.


With a track record of providing coaching and mentoring support and employment-related information, advice and guidance support to people, you will have the personal skills and ability to deal with your own changing and dynamic caseload of clients, each with their own set of personalised requirements, and support the clients on individualised pathways to move them closer to the labour market with the ultimate aim of securing sustainable employment.


Ways to Work operates in St Helens Town Centre and we have an office in Earlestown, you will be expected to cover both sites and attend community events as and when required. You may be required to work in various locations or different teams of the Council.


This post is fixed term until 31 March 2026, contract extension is be subject to funding.
