Job summary

This post in Intensive Care Medicine offers an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic critical care unit where you will gain experience in the management of a wide range of medical pathologies and be able to develop key managerial and governance skills. The hospital is part of the North East London Adult Critical Care Network and is supported by the tertiary centres at the Royal London Hospital (neuro, trauma and vascular) and St Bartholomew's hospital (Cardiac and haem oncology).

The post holder will be working alongside experienced ICM colleagues and will be fully supported do develop the hard and soft skills to become an effective critical care doctor. The unit is very active in research and audit with several presentations at international and national conferences and participation will be encouraged. The post holder will also be expected to take a lead on developing and implementing a QIP during their time and will contribute to the unit meetings and journal club presentations.

While this is a fixed term post, there may be the opportunity to extend the contract. Career development will be actively supported.

Previous experience in critical care is not needed, and you will receive induction and training, with the expectation that you will develop your critical care skills. You will have a clinical supervisor and will have access to a portfolio to support your educational journey.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality clinical care to critically ill patients whether in the Intensive Care Unit.

Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans for patients.

Ensure the highest standards of communication with patients, their families and the MDT, including maintaining an accurate written record.

Participate in teaching and training activities for medical students, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance processes.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.

Participate in the on-call rota for the Intensive Care Unit

Job responsibilities

The brand new, state-of-the-art, Intensive Care unit provides 12 beds providing level 2 and level 3 care. With over 600 admissions a year, one third of which are ventilated, there is a high level of clinical challenge and an emphasis on multidisciplinary team working.

We admit a wide range of patients from the ED and the wards with few elective admissions.

The unit is equipped with new ventilators, monitors and haemofilters, and we are in the final stages of the digital integration required to become fully paperless.

The severity score of our patients is similar to those in comparable units:our Standardised Mortality Rate has been below expected for several consecutive years and our infection control targets are in line with national trends.

We are heavily involved in research and the post holder will be strongly encourage to be involved in the current studies and projects being run by the department.

We have an excellent training record and provide excellent educational support to our trainees.

• Understanding the principals of governance and risk management

• Good history and examination skills
• Ability to formulate a working diagnosis
• Ability to order and interpret appropriate investigations

• Ultrasound training

Teaching and training

• Experience in teaching and Simulation
• Commitment to lifelong learning

• Instructor on Life Support course(s)- ALS/ATLS/APLS
