The L.M. Montgomery Institute (LMMI) (https://www.lmmontgomery.ca/) is seeking an undergraduate Research Assistant to support 1) the online, multimedia Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies and 2) the online, open access course, L.M. Montgomery: Reading with the Experts.

The Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies is the only journal dedicated to one of the world’s most enduring writers, L.M. Montgomery (1874–1+42), author of Anne of Green Gables, among other works of fiction, as well as poetry, letters, and journals. The Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies is a refereed, open-access digital space and an official publication of the L.M. Montgomery Institute and Robertson Library, both at UPEI. The successful candidate for this position will contribute to the development of the Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies. The student will provide editorial support, answering emails, managing files and folders, uploading submissions to the journal website, and formatting submissions on the journal website. There will also be scope for creative work like creating multimedia exhibits to enhance submissions or creating social media promotional materials.

The online, open access course, L.M. Montgomery: Reading with the Experts, will feature interviews with Montgomery scholars (via the platform Pressbooks). The successful candidate will support the completion of this course by finalizing transcriptions; identifying key topics, questions, and sources for each interview; and creating a shareable badge for participants who “complete” the course.

The student will enhance their knowledge of publishing and website design, as well as of Canadian and PEI history, literature, arts, and culture.

While digital or technical expertise is not required, an openness to learning new technologies is; the successful candidate will be given support and provided with training to develop relevant web skills. This is an excellent opportunity for an Arts student to gain or improve their digital skills.

The student will be supervised by Dr. Kate Scarth, Chair of L.M. Montgomery Studies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to the development of the online, open access, multimedia Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island’s L.M. Montgomery Institute.

Upload multi-media submissions to the journal website (the website’s platform is Drupal)
Answer emails
Manage files and folders
Make edits to journal articles in line with the journal’s style guide as requested by the editorial team or authors
Develop expertise in technical aspects of the journal website
Assist contributors to create multimedia/digital exhibits to better display their work (e.g., online exhibit of photography)
Create multi-media/social media promotional material to raise the journal’s profile amongst interdisciplinary academics, Montgomery enthusiasts, and the general public

Contribute to the development of the online, open access, multimedia course L.M. Montgomery: Reading with the Experts at the University of Prince Edward Island’s L.M. Montgomery Institute.

Transcribing interviews and finalizing them (making edits, formatting) transcripts
Assisting in the identification of key topics, questions, and sources for each interview
Creating a badge for participants who “complete” the course that can be shared elsewhere (e.g., on social media)
Minute taking for meetings
Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

UPEI Bachelor of Arts Student
The key requirements for this role are initiative/self-motivation, organization, and the ability to work independently and virtually with others
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Highly motivated and responsible
The ability to work independently and be well organized
Experience working closely with others
Willingness to learn new digital tools
Experience with technology/digital tools (particularly website design or development) is an asset
Familiarity with or interest in the life and/or work of L.M. Montgomery and with Prince Edward Island/Atlantic Canadian literature and/or history is an asset
