Shapes to Forms is seeking a creative, dependable, and enthusiastic Sewing & Fashion Design Instructor to teach hands-on sewing and fashion design programs for students ages 8–14.
This position begins with summer camps and workshops and continues into the academic year with after-school enrichment classes and semester-long fashion design programs. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children, loves sewing and design, and is excited to inspire the next generation of makers, designers, and problem-solvers.
About Shapes to Forms
Shapes to Forms teaches fashion design through creativity, engineering, mathematics, and construction. Students learn sewing, patternmaking, fashion illustration, and garment construction while developing confidence, critical thinking, and hands-on skills.
Responsibilities
Lead small-group sewing and fashion design classes
Teach hand sewing, machine sewing, and beginner garment construction techniques
Guide students through projects from concept to completion
Demonstrate sewing techniques and troubleshoot student work
Create a positive, safe, and encouraging classroom environment
Assist with fashion camps, workshops, and special events
Maintain classroom organization and care of equipment and supplies
Communicate professionally with parents, staff, and school partners
Represent Shapes to Forms with enthusiasm and professionalism
Qualifications
Strong sewing skills and confidence operating sewing machines
Experience reading patterns and constructing garments
Previous experience teaching, mentoring, coaching, or working with children
Fashion illustration skills are a plus
Knowledge of patternmaking or fashion design is a plus
Patient, organized, dependable, and able to lead a group independently
Passion for creativity, education, and empowering young learners
Requirements
Must pass a background check (paid for by Shapes to Forms)
Reliable transportation required
Ability to travel to local school sites for weekday programs; weekend classes are primarily held in La Jolla Cove
Authorized to work in the United States
Schedule
Part-time: approximately 5–15 hours per week
Summer camps, workshops, and special events
Academic-year classes primarily held after school (1:30–5:30 PM)
Occasional weekend classes and events
Flexible scheduling based on program enrollment
Compensation
$23–$30 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
Opportunities for additional hours through camps, workshops, private lessons, and special events
