Job Description
Responsibilities: As a Hospital Corpsman, your duties will include:
• Performing emergency medical treatments on military personnel in various situations, including field operations.
• Conducting emergency dental treatments and managing dental X-ray equipment.
• Assisting in operations in both general and specialized surgical settings.
• Administering preventive care and medications such as immunizations and intravenous fluids.
• Conducting physical examinations and supporting treatment for various medical conditions.
• Ensuring proper sanitation and safety protocols are followed.
• Maintaining patient treatment records and participating in clinical research and testing.
• Assisting Navy Physicians and Nurses in multiple medical specialties, including radiology, physical therapy, and family medicine.
Work Environment: As a Hospital Corpsman, you will encounter diverse work environments that may take you around the globe. You could be assigned to a Navy medical treatment facility, like an on-base hospital or clinic, or serve aboard ships or submarines. You will collaborate with medical professionals and be trained as a skilled first responder, adaptable to various settings.
Training & Advancement: Once you complete your initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes (Boot Camp), you will undergo specialized training, including:
• Hospital Corps A School (19 weeks) in San Antonio, Texas, focusing on patient care fundamentals.
• Field Medical Service School for advanced training related to Marine Corps units, if qualified.
Following training, you will be assigned to a Navy medical treatment facility or an operational unit. Promotion opportunities are competitive and based on your performance.
Post-Service Opportunities: Serving as a medic in the Navy provides excellent groundwork for a successful healthcare career. The specialized training and experience can lead to valuable certifications in civilian fields such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and others.
Qualifications & Requirements: You must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be a U.S. citizen. This role requires a genuine interest in healthcare, strong communication, writing, and arithmetic skills, as well as the ability to work with tools and equipment.
