Description
The Legislative Research Commission (LRC) is accepting applications for the position of Legislative Floor Assistant. This position is nonpartisan and requires the ability to work with neutrality in a politically charged environment.
The Legislative Research Commission provides staff support to the Kentucky General Assembly. The agency offers unique opportunities to people seeking fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding careers. LRC staff members provide diverse services and are united by the common purpose of supporting the branch of government closest to the people.
This is a permanent, full-time position with benefits including health and life insurance; retirement plan; and paid holidays, vacation, and sick days. Compensatory time is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis with prior approval.
Job Duties:
Answer telephones and take accurate messages; relay to appropriate individual or office.
Assist in ordering and producing legislative letters, citations, colonels, and admirals.
Interact with constituents, legislators, lobbyists, and state agency personnel.
Provide backup support in legislative offices and other departments as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
One year working in customer service, administrative, or related field preferred.
Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Flexible and willing to locate to assigned areas, as needed.
Strong verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain strict rules of confidentiality and nonpartisanship.
Ability to maintain composure and work in a professional manner when dealing with a large number of guests at one time under intense pressure.
Willingness to work long, unpredictable hours during legislative sessions.
Must be prompt and reliable
The individual selected for this position must have a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a public service orientation with the ability to maintain a good rapport with LRC staff, state legislators, and the public. The individual must be able to work under stress, with the understanding that during legislative sessions significant amounts of overtime will be required.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High School or GED
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Education may be substituted for experience or experience substituted for education at the discretion of the supervisor and manager.
