Deep Creek Learning Center: An Acton Academy is looking for a Guide to join our learning community. If you're tired of the traditional classroom model — the worksheets, the lecturing, the bell schedule — and you've been waiting for a guiding role that actually lets kids think for themselves, this might be it.
We're an Acton Academy-affiliated microschool, which means we don't have teachers in the traditional sense. We have Guides. Instead of standing at the front of the room delivering lessons, you'll be asking questions, running Socratic discussions, helping students set and chase their own goals, and stepping back so kids can struggle productively and figure things out. It's a different kind of hard — less about classroom management, more about holding space for real learning to happen.
What you'll actually be doing: Leading small-group Socratic discussions instead of lectures. Helping students design their own learning goals and hold themselves accountable. Facilitating project-based, self-directed work across subjects. Building a classroom culture rooted in respect, independence, and real-world problem solving. Mentoring kids through conflict, setbacks, and big questions — without just handing them the answer.
What we're looking for: Someone who genuinely believes kids are capable of more than we usually give them credit for. Comfort with ambiguity — we're not handing you a script. Patience for the Socratic method, which means resisting the urge to just tell students what to do. Experience working with kids (classroom teaching, tutoring, coaching, youth mentorship — we're flexible on background). A sense of humor helps. So does genuine curiosity about how kids learn.
A few practical things: Hours: 8 am - 4 pm, Mid August start date through Mid June.
