Job Description

Whānau Āwhina Plunket is the largest service in Aotearoa supporting tamariki under-five and their whānau. As well as clinical support, we’re also here to connect caregivers with services that support holistic health and wellbeing and access to helpful services to form meaningful connections.

Supporting communities in Canterbury, this a part-time fixed term position until 30th June 2027, working across Tuesday – Friday.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

This unique position combines Community Services Coordinator and Injury Prevention Coordinator responsibilities, offering a varied and rewarding opportunity to make a difference for tamariki and whānau across the region. Approximately half of your time will focus on connecting communities, building partnerships, and supporting volunteers, while the other half will be dedicated to delivering child safety and injury prevention initiatives.

In the injury prevention component of the role, you'll work alongside whānau, community groups and key stakeholders to promote child safety messages and deliver practical support. This includes coordinating and running injury prevention programmes, facilitating education sessions, supporting child restraint initiatives and building relationships with organisations such as NZ Police, road safety coordinators, early childhood providers, and Māori and Pacific community partners.

Together, these two areas of responsibility provide an exciting opportunity to strengthen community connections while helping create safer environments for tamariki and supporting equitable outcomes for whānau.

A key organisational goal is to ensure honour and uphold our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and focus on providing better access to our services to our priority communities - Māori, Pacific Peoples, Young parents, children in state care Rainbow whānau and those living rurally. In conjunction with your Community Services Manager, you’ll work together to ensure we are where we are needed most.

Working with volunteers and attending events may require weekend work from time to time. The salary for this role is $28.95 an hour.

He kōrero mōu | About you

At the centre of this role is people – you’ll have the ability to network internally and externally and be a professional representative of the organisation. A fair level of computer literacy is needed as you’ll post and engage with whānau on our local social media pages and promote opportunities to prospective volunteers.

While experience working in the community would be advantageous, asking the right questions to understand the journey and services needed by parents and caregivers, then the drive to make it a reality is key to this role. Ideally you will be well networked across this region and able to hit the ground running with insights and ideas to help us move forward.

You love connecting with people and building real relationships with whānau. You’re comfortable working in ways that reflect and respect Māori and Pasifika cultures, and you understand how important it is to listen, learn, and meet families where they are. Whether you identify as Māori or Pasifika yourself, or you simply have a genuine commitment to culturally safe practice, you bring kindness, openness, and respect to every conversation. Most of all, you enjoy being part of a role where culture, community, and supporting tamariki to thrive are at the heart of everything you do.
