Job Description

General Responsibility:

The Career Practitioner - reports to the Associate Director in the Career Development and Job Search Services (CDJSS). This position assists clients to become self-sufficient in their career development management through identifying and meeting their employment goals by helping them to return to work, find new work, or access employment and training opportunities.

The Career Practitioner is responsible to ensure that CDJS/CFN meets its targets and expected outcomes successfully under the Community and Social Services (CSS) contract, and other similar contracts signed by CFN.

The Career Development Practitioner will adhere to all Centre for Newcomers Policies and Procedures, Alberta Community and Social Services regulations, Career Development Association of Alberta’s (CDAA) professional ethics and ensure confidentiality of client information and client records as provided for under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).

Specific Responsibilities:

With respect to the CDJS programs and services:

Provide one-on-one career and employment counseling services to clients based on the collaborative action – planning model to establish a client employment action plan. This will include needs assessment, identification of training and employment options & setting realistic goals and provision of referrals where needed.
Facilitate and conduct first language job search workshops with a focus on participatory techniques and orienting immigrants to Canadian labour market.
Manage client cases by providing support through regular contact, either in person or by telephone or e-mail, with the client from the beginning to the end of the action plan. Case Management may also include career reassessment at the start of or during participation in programs and services.
Assist in recruiting and generating participants for ROWA program and participate in preparing monthly reports.
Manage client files by maintaining and completing accurate paper and computer files through Mobius entries for each client, appropriate to the level of service provided and as policy and procedures outline.
Conduct timely client follow ups as stipulated by policy & procedure.
Provide employment information services to Job Search Hub (JSH) clients and refer them to relevant concerned career practitioners for further career and employment assistance.
Conduct resume critiques and interview preparation and other job search coaching services for clients.
Contribute to the advancement and achievement of functional team goals in coordination with the concerned Functional Team Lead.
Participate in the identification/development/exploration of new employment service ideas/offerings during the team’s planning sessions/meetings.
Qualifications

Experience in relevant human services discipline, such as adult education and training, social work, career development, community development and counselling
Bachelor’s degree, management training or a diploma in related field
Strong communication and networking skills
Effective organizational, analytic and writing skills
Critical understanding of issues and policies affecting newcomers;
Demonstrated practical experience and knowledge in community development work.
Experience working with immigrant and refugee applications systems within local referral network.
Good facilitation, communication and supportive counseling skills.
Knowledge of target group languages, culture and connections with the community.
Knowledge of settlement processes and familiarity with immigrant issues, resources and services
Ability to work independently daily, making routine decisions regularly.
Knowledge and experience in MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other programs.
Accurate record keeping, filing and reporting skills in English. In addition to English, one of the preferred second languages is Tagalog, Arabic, or a Nigerian dialects.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Class 5 Driver License is a must.


Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 28 months

Pay: $2+.00-$31.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
