The Trades team at the University of Toronto offers a broad range of expert services across seven specialized trade shops. Our licensed professionals have an in-depth knowledge of the campus and are dedicated to delivering high-quality craftsmanship at competitive prices.

We place a strong emphasis on preserving the campus’s historic materials, ensuring that each project is approached with care and respect for the building’s legacy. Ethics and safety are at the core of everything we do. We receive rigorous, specialized training to effectively manage workplace hazards, including asbestos and working at heights


Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Manager of Trade Services is responsible for the supervision, administration and co-ordination of unionized trades workers in the maintenance and renovation of University buildings, grounds, and equipment. Ensures customer service standards are met in the areas of scheduling and quality of work, through regular liaison with customers and inspection of work. Administers and enforces collective bargaining agreements and provides technical consultation services to own staff, other divisions within Facilities and Services, and other University departments. Hires unionized personnel to ensure adequate staffing is available to meet customer service requirements. Responsible for quality assurance, and analyzing work methods and processes on a continuous basis. Develops and implements productivity and efficiency measures and creates a competitive customer service environment.


Qualification Required:


EDUCATION:

A University degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong grasp of workplace health and safety standards (Ontario Occupational Health Safety Act and Regulations).
Certificate of Qualification is an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 3 years' related experience managing skilled trades in a unionized environment.
Familiarity with various trades (e.g., electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, locksmithing, tinsmith and steamfitters).

SKILLS:

Proficient with standard office computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel).
Process Improvement: ability to analyze existing workflows, identify inefficiencies, and implement solutions to optimize processes for better performance and outcomes.
Problem solving skills
Communiaction by acting as a bridge between tradespeople, site supervisors, and management.
Strong analytical skills and ability to solve problems
Leadership under pressure, ensuring work gets done despite multiple demands and in extreme environments

OTHER:

Effectively assign tasks, coordinate schedules, and manage workloads across multiple trades.
Strong oral and written communication skills
Good leadership and supervisory skills
Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of customer service under pressure of multiple demands
Ability to exercise good judgment and initiative; excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills.

Extended hours may be required. Emergency call-ins on occasion.
