Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.
Position Summary:

A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,668 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,334 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,334 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

Performs maintenance and repair in the areas of plumbing, steam systems and welding. Position will be a welder for maintenance within Facilities Services for the repair of existing facilities steam or plumbing-related building systems and the fabrication of necessary components, taking direction from the Plumbing Maintenance Supervisor for all maintenance welding, including the repair needs of all other Campus Maintenance Shops as need or available.
• A valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. Also requires a NC State Inspector’s License or the ability to achieve certification within six months of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Management Preferences:

-Journey level demonstrated competencies in maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of facility components.

-Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in commercial steam maintenance and repair.

-Demonstrated competencies in maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of facility components.

-Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and plumbing schematics.
Required Licenses/Certifications:

A valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. Also requires a NC State Inspector’s License or the ability to achieve certification within six months of hire.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation; ascend/descend ladders and scaffolding on job sites; high degree of hand/eye coordination and hand manipulation; ability to work for extended periods of time with hands overhead.

Ability to provide support for Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs, which requires a baseline blood draw and physical. Entry into hot labs, with an Environment Health & Safety department escort, required. Ability to wear respiratory protection, receive annual medical certification, and be fit tested and trained.

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).

This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
