About us

The Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) is comprised of eight departments that are highly rated for research excellence: Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Space & Climate Physics, Mathematics, Science and Technology Studies, Earth Sciences, Risk and Disaster Reduction and Statistical Sciences. In addition, the faculty has its own interdepartmental undergraduate degree programme: Natural Sciences. The faculty provides a base for a number of research centres and institutes: these facilitate in-depth and interdisciplinary research through collaboration between experts within MAPS, and in related areas such as Engineering Sciences and Life Sciences.

Individual researchers and research groups within UCL play key leadership roles within major international projects (such as the LHC, Dark Energy Survey, Solar Orbiter, Cassini, UK Catalysis Hub and many others). Faculty staff have been successful in attracting research income from the research councils, European FP7 and ERC, Royal Society, Leverhulme and other funding agencies. The Chemistry Department at University College London is the oldest in England and today is one of the best in the UK, being ranked 3rd in the UK for its world-leading research in REF2021. We are located in Bloomsbury, at the heart of London, and offer an exciting and vibrant environment in which to study in one of the UK's top universities. The Department of Chemistry at UCL is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching.

The department offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches ~750 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists.

The department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 80 students per year and has an overall PGR student school of about 200 students.

The Chemistry

Department has over 60 members of academic staff carrying out world-leading research. We specialise in the areas of organic synthesis, chemical biology, computational chemistry, nanotechnology, inorganic and materials chemistry, physical chemistry and chemical physics. The department has an annual research income of around £15 million, derived from many sources including the Research Councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, and NERC), European Commission and a wide range of charities and industrial partners in the UK, Europe, and the USA.

About the role

Provide technical support within the Chemistry Department teaching laboratories to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of practical teaching. The role is accountable for maintaining laboratory readiness, managing resources and inventory to meet teaching needs, and supporting the successful delivery of assigned modules in coordination with the Teaching Laboratory Operations Manager.
Hours of work will vary between 08:00 – 16:00 and 11:00 – 19:00 depending on the laboratory courses running at the time. However, the role will primarily require working hours of 11:00 – 19:00. Due to the nature of the work some weekend working will be required and there will be restrictions when annual leave may be taken.
