About the Role
Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department, these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end March 31, 2027.
The Sports Information Assistant (SIA) supports all aspects of varsity event media coverage and game day staff support. The SIA will assist with managing game day set up, post game reporting requirements, statistical coverage, and broadcast logistics. They are responsible for game day media coverage including writing the game story, posting scores on social media, score reporting and supporting media requests. The ideal candidate loves sports and is seeking career experience in sport communications, journalism, or marketing. The role requires professionalism, leadership skills, and a proactive mindset.
Responsibilities
Build media content for the website, social channels, and webcast
At the direction of the Digital Media Coordinator, edit, review and publish in game content on both individual team accounts and the MRU Cougars social media accounts
Write, edit, and submit brief game recaps of each home game
Take action photos of home games when required
Cut, organize and publish highlights from games when required
Follow Canada West media reporting regulations post game, sharing statistics and posting scores in timely manner
Support external media on game day as needed
Support Game Day Supervisor in-game as needed
Interact and build relationships with varsity teams and staff
Help write feature stories highlighting MRU teams
Manage action photo library on a weekly basis
Ensure away game statistics and scores are posted weekly
Write and post weekly stories as directed
Qualifications
12 - 18 months of related experience
A strong knowledge of basketball, hockey, soccer and/or volleyball
A career interest in sport communications, journalism, digital media, or marketing
Ability to work Mondays as well as Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings
Highly motivated individual who can work well independently and under pressure
Committed to time management and punctuality
Previous leadership experience is considered an asset
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and video editing is an asset
Knowledge of broadcasting is not required but considered an asset
Salary: $21.87 - $27.61 per hour
