Senior Software Developer, Cloud and Platform- job post Archipelago Marine Research
Job Description
Archipelago has been around for over 40 years and is at the forefront of fisheries monitoring solutions for fisheries around the world. Our team of 100+ staff create and deploy technology for commercial fishing vessels, at-sea observers, and dockside monitors to collect data and report back to our clients. This data helps manage global fisheries and ensure sustainability for generations to come. We also offer marine environmental services for clients up and down the west coast of Canada and the United States. Our head office sits right on the water in Victoria (Esquimalt), British Columbia, and we have offices in Alaska, Oregon, Australia, and in port cities up and down the BC coast.
WHAT WILL YOU DO EVERY DAY IN THIS ROLE?
This is a hands-on individual contributor role reporting to our Technical Manager, Platform. You will help evolve the cloud architecture behind our FishVue connected products, building secure and scalable cloud services and data pipelines that support on-vessel devices, operational telemetry, computer vision pipelines, and customer-facing applications. You will work primarily with C#, .NET, and deploy your work within Microsoft Azure. You will be part of our core product team, building and supporting the platform that is key to enabling our next generation of intelligent products.
Cloud Architecture – You will build event-driven services on Azure and turn them into reusable platform approaches that work across FishVue Fleet, FishVue AI, Micro, Vantage, and whatever comes next. That includes deploying and operating across multiple Azure regions and meeting customer and regulatory data-residency requirements.
Data Pipelines – You will help build the ingestion and processing paths for telemetry, media, device events, and analytical outputs, and keep them reliable under real production workloads.
Infrastructure and Operations – You will contribute to our infrastructure as code assets, automated build and test, deployment and rollback, and practical observability through structured logging, metrics, alerting, dashboards, and runbooks. If you build it, you help operate it.
Here are some of the specific activities you can expect to own:
Design and implement event-driven cloud services using Restful APIs, C#, .NET, Azure Functions, Azure Blob Storage, Azure Event Grid, and related Azure technologies.
Build data-ingestion and processing pipelines for telemetry, media, device events, and analytical outputs.
Develop reusable cloud architecture that can be applied across our product portfolio.
Design approaches for deploying and operating infrastructure and services across multiple Azure regions.
Establish patterns that meet customer and regulatory data-residency requirements.
Build and maintain infrastructure as code for cloud environments and shared platform services.
Improve automated build, test, deployment, environment-promotion, and rollback processes.
Establish practical observability through structured logging, metrics, alerting, operational dashboards, and runbooks.
Write and review production software, architecture proposals, interface definitions, and technical documentation.
Work with our embedded, application, and AI developers to define reliable boundaries between devices, cloud services, data pipelines, and user-facing applications.
Evaluate technical trade-offs and contribute to build-versus-buy decisions.
Identify architecture or implementation approaches that should be simplified, strengthened, or replaced.
Mentor developers through pairing, design discussions, code review, and practical examples.

WHAT DO YOU OFFER?
We’re looking for a candidate with a few years spent designing, building, and operating production cloud systems - not just prototypes, but services with real customers, real uptime expectations, and real consequences when something breaks. We are looking for someone who can bring the following to our team:
Strong professional experience with C# and .NET.
Hands-on experience using Azure services such as Azure Functions, Blob Storage, Event Grid, and other technologies selected according to workload requirements.
Experience designing asynchronous, event-driven, or distributed systems.
Experience building and operating data-processing pipelines under real production workloads.
A strong understanding of data sovereignty and data security, along with cloud infrastructure, including application security, networking, identity, authorization, and secrets management.
Experience implementing infrastructure as code and automated deployment pipelines.
Experience operating customer-facing systems with uptime, support, incident-response, and security expectations.
Experience in more than one engineering organization, or in meaningfully different production environments.
Evidence that you have successfully introduced or improved engineering practices within an established team.
The ability to explain both your successful and unsuccessful architecture decisions, and what you took from them.
The confidence to challenge an existing approach constructively and back an alternative with working software, evidence, and clear technical reasoning.
Experience mentoring developers without relying on formal management authority.
BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE
Experience with multi-region systems, data residency, regional isolation, disaster recovery, or related deployment concerns.
MQTT, connected-device platforms, or intermittently connected edge systems
PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, or other operational and time-series data stores
Media, video, or large-object processing
Production deployment of machine-learning inference services
Experience with container-based workloads
Azure monitoring, policy, security, and cost-management tools
Systems operating in regulated or data-sensitive environments
Prior fisheries experience is not required.
WHERE WILL YOU START?
Your first major assignment will be to help productionize new FishVue AI capabilities:
Deploy FishVue AI model capabilities as a cloud service Determine scalability and performance patterns of the inference service
Establishing the Azure infrastructure, identity, security, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and operational patterns required to run those services reliably.
These projects will set the reusable platform approaches we then apply across the broader FishVue product portfolio, so the decisions you make early will stick around.
WHAT ELSE?
The anticipated salary range for this role is $90,000 - $110,000 annually based on experience. This is a permanent, full-time position based on a 37.5-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with 4 weeks paid vacation. We work a hybrid schedule out of our Victoria (Esquimalt) office, and we are targeting a September 2026 start.
