About the Role

Due to a strong pipeline of work including complex projects such as large-scale residential developments, infrastructure projects, commercial developments and heritage redevelopments, we are looking for a knowledgeable and proactive Senior Resource Consents Planner to join the Planning Team at Hutt City Council.

This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll work across a range of statutory and policy matters, guide applicants through complex planning processes, and contribute your expertise to strategic decisions that impact our city's future. You'll also play a key role in supporting others in the team, and in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.


You will:

Process and assess resource consent applications in line with the District Plan and legislative requirements
Advise and inform customers, developers and stakeholders on planning matters and environmental legislation in a customer-focused manner
Represent Council at Committee meetings, hearings, and Environment Court proceedings
Lead and support colleagues through peer reviews and mentoring
Providing planning input for s223/224 applications.
Champion continuous improvement by identifying ways to streamline systems and deliver better outcomes for our community

About You

You'll be someone who brings sound planning expertise, a commitment to great customer service, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You're confident navigating legislation, comfortable presenting advice and evidence, and keen to contribute to continuous improvement across the team. To thrive in this role, you will bring:

A recognised tertiary qualification in resource management, planning, or a related field
Experience in processing or preparing resource consent applications
Customer focus and communication skills, with the ability to engage constructively across all levels and build relationships
Ownership and management of your own workload and willingness to support team members
An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a local government context and a willingness to incorporate te ao Māori into your mahi
Membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute or eligible for membership would be advantageous but not essential
