If so, then consider this opportunity with the Indigenous Consultation and Partnerships Branch - Indigenous Relations and Consultation Support Unit NE/S, Mines and Minerals Division, to lead, coordinate and facilitate relationships and partnerships in support of the government's mineral and economic development goals and commitments in relation to Indigenous initiatives and programs.
About us:
The Indigenous Consultation and Partnerships Branch provides information and advisory services regarding Indigenous affairs to all division and branches of the Ministry of Energy and Mines. These services are primarily focused on providing information and advice regarding the duty to consult, Aboriginal and treaty rights, facilitating partnerships and relationship building with the Indigenous communities in Ontario.
About the job
In this position, you will:
Provide expert advice to senior management and corporate support to ministry staff on Indigenous issues and in the development and implementation of mineral and economic development policies and programs
Provide front-line service and response to Indigenous communities in support of consultation initiatives, and develop and foster critical linkages and partnerships
Lead and/or support consultation efforts for Ministry mandated activities
Plan, develop and coordinate the development of briefing materials, reports and issues management plans pertaining to Indigenous matters for senior management
Act as liaison between the ministry, Indigenous communities and partners, and represent the ministry in inter-jurisdictional working groups, conferences and meetings
Provide strategic planning, negotiation and facilitation in the development, and implementation of Indigenous initiatives and programs
Note: Ability to travel to remote communities may be required.
What you bring to the team
Technical Expertise
You have:
practical/operational experience with, and knowledge of, Ontario's Indigenous communities and organizations
knowledge of land and resource development matters, including community impacts, opportunities and perspectives
knowledge of economic, legal and political issues underlying Indigenous affairs, history, culture, governance, protocols, agreements and services affecting Indigenous communities
an understanding of government priorities, policies and strategic directions for Indigenous affairs
an understanding of the factors and issues impacting and influencing the Crown's legal duty to consult, Aboriginal and treaty rights, and inter-governmental relations
an understanding of the concepts, barriers and principles for engaging, consulting and building relationships with Indigenous partners, communities and organizations
the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to issues and decisions affecting Indigenous communities
Communication, Relationship Management and Facilitation Skills
You have:
excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills to develop trusting and positive working relationships with Indigenous communities, colleagues, and other stakeholders
facilitation, mediation and consensus-building skills to liaise with, and resolve issues between, Indigenous communities, ministries and stakeholders
communication skills, tact and political acuity to exchange information with, and provide informed strategic advice and issues management support to, a broad range of internal and external clients with diverse technical and cultural backgrounds
demonstrated written communication skills to respond to issues, and prepare briefing notes, and presentations within limited timeframes
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
You have the ability to:
identify and manage current/emerging, complex, inter-related, and highly political issues to resolve them
develop and implement strategies to engage and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities
interpret Indigenous case law and evaluate impacts on ministry and corporate policy and programs
utilize your analytical skills to identify gaps and barriers in Indigenous mineral and economic development, and identify the impacts on communities.
Project Management Skills
You can:
act as liaison for specific mineral and economic development projects as well as planning, issues, and related project delivery matters
prioritize workload, and multiple demands, and handle contentious issues which arise unexpectedly
