Duties Summary
This position is located within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Veterans Health Care System in Saint Louis, MO, which includes the John Cochran medical center, the Jefferson Barracks Division, and outpatient centers. The Supervisory Medical Technician will provide supervisory oversight to Phlebotomist in P&LMS and perform phlebotomy responsibilities. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Supervisory/Managerial Functions: supervises and coaches phlebotomist staff and ensure that the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated to the team. Distributes and communicates team assignments, problems to be solved, actionable events, and deadlines. Controls and approves leave schedules and requests. Counsels and recommends disciplinary actions; resolves simple employee complaints. Provides training or arranges for training needs of the team. Works with laboratory leadership and informs of staff performance appraisals and issues/problems. Participates in job interviews and selection of applicants for vacant positions.
Additional Managerial duties: solves technical specimen's problems and discrepancies, answers technical test questions; manages supplies and inventory control. Identifies laboratory instrument and equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate action. Promotes efficient delivery of laboratory information and reports statistics on laboratory workload. Serves as an active member of laboratory process improvement initiatives.
Phlebotomy/Diagnostic Test and Procedures: performs specimen collection and processes complex specimens from inpatient and outpatient patients; receives, routes and stores specimens noting labeling, contamination, hemolysis, shortage or other errors in sampling; selects the correct method of resolution for problem samples. May perform a limited amount of patient testing in different sections of the laboratory (e.g., urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry, microbiology, serology, immunology). Uses laboratory computer systems and performs manual procedures during computer down times.
Performs other duties as necessary to support the overall daily operations of the laboratory.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
