Patient Care Attendants (PCAs) in hospitals play a critical role in providing basic patient care and ensuring patient comfort during their hospital stay. The job requires a high level of empathy, patience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Typical job duties of a PCA in a hospital may include:
• Assisting patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and grooming
• Assisting patients with mobility and transfers
• Monitoring patients' vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse
• Assisting with feeding and hydration, and monitoring patients' food and fluid intake
• Providing emotional support to patients and their families
• Assisting with medical procedures, such as catheterization or wound care, as directed by healthcare professionals
• Maintaining a clean and safe patient environment
• Documenting patient care activities and reporting changes in patient condition to healthcare professionals
• Assisting with patient transportation within the hospital
• Responding to patient requests and communicating patient needs to the healthcare team.

To perform the role of a PCA in a hospital, one must have a high school diploma or equivalent and undergo basic training in patient care techniques. Candidates should have excellent communication skills and be able to work well in a team environment. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and attention to detail are also important. The candidate must be physically fit, as the job may require lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods. The hospital may require PCAs to be certified in basic life support or CPR. Additionally, some hospitals may require PCAs to be trained in basic computer skills and use of electronic health record (EHR) systems.
