Marine Workshop Technician – Caterpillar 3516B Specialist
**Wellington | Full Time | $93,350 per annum + Overtime**
Bluebridge is seeking an experienced Marine Workshop Technician to join our growing technical team.
Based primarily at our workshop facility, this role supports the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and troubleshooting of equipment across our ferry fleet. While diesel engine maintenance forms a significant part of the role, successful applicants will be expected to work on a wide range of shipboard systems and machinery.
The role offers a diverse workload covering workshop repairs, onboard maintenance, breakdown response, major overhauls, fabrication support, and vessel projects.
Previous experience working in a marine environment is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out planned and corrective maintenance on marine machinery and equipment.
Perform major overhauls and repairs on diesel engines, generators, pumps, compressors, hydraulic systems, valves, and auxiliary machinery.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, cooling, and control system faults.
Support vessel maintenance periods, drydock projects, and breakdown response activities.
Remove, overhaul, test, and reinstall shipboard equipment.
Complete workshop fabrication, refurbishment, and repair work.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and technical documentation.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and reliability projects.
Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and workmanship.
What We're Looking For
Essential
Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Diesel Mechanics, Marine Engineering, Heavy Automotive, or similar.
Proven experience maintaining and repairing industrial or marine equipment.
Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
Full driver's licence.
Highly Desirable
Previous marine, shipyard, offshore, dredging, or power generation experience.
Extensive experience with Caterpillar diesel engines, particularly the 3500 Series and Caterpillar 3516B engines.
Experience carrying out complete engine overhauls and major component rebuilds.
Experience with Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), SIS, ADEM engine management systems, or equivalent diagnostic platforms.
Experience commissioning and maintaining generator sets.
Welding, machining, fabrication, or hydraulic repair experience.
Forklift, confined space, working at heights, or similar industry certifications.
Working Arrangements
This is a hands-on operational role supporting a 24/7 ferry operation.
Applicants must be willing to:
Work occasional nights and weekends.
Attend vessels outside normal business hours when operational requirements dictate.
Participate in emergency breakdown response when required.
Travel between workshop and vessel locations as necessary.
