Lifeguard or Swim Instructor

We are still recruiting for some additional Lifeguards and/or Instructors with daytime availability to support the Pass Pool this summer.

POSITION TITLE:

Lifeguard or Swim Instructor


REPORTS TO:

Lead Lifeguard


REVISION DATE:

January 2025


WAGE:

$1+.00/hour, wage increases with both certifications


STATUS:

Temporary Full Time Seasonal (May-September)


Position Summary

Under the direction of the Lead Lifeguard, Lifeguards provide pool supervision ensuring patrons have a safe and enjoyable experience at the Pass Pool. Instructors provide instruction as trained by the Lifesavings Society for lessons and programming.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Functions as a Lifeguard; monitoring aquatics area (pools, deck, change rooms etc.) for guest safety or teaches lessons in accordance with Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor training.

Responsible to maintain order and proper conduct of visitors of the pool including educating the public regarding safety procedures and instruct them to stop all unsafe activities.

Handle issues/concerns that might arise on shift regarding the facility, general public and/or team members or escalates to the Lead Lifeguard.

Performs a variety of custodial and facility maintenance tasks assisting with the operation and delivery of aquatic programs.

Attends and participates in regularly scheduled in-service training.

Performs pool tests and pool maintenance in a safe manner which may include chemical handling.

Completes daily operational checks and record keeping on shift (i.e., shift reports, health and safety, first aid reports, fecal reports, pool chemistry, stats, etc.)

Responsible for opening and closing the facility.

Set up of the pool area and special events with appropriate equipment available etc.

Performs group instructional duties which involve observing and safeguarding the activities in the pool and surrounding areas.

Makes recommendations to the Lead Lifeguard for improvements or changes.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge of all applicable safety procedures and legislation affecting aquatic programs.
Excellent communication and customer service skills are required to handle and resolve customer enquiries and complaints.
Strong team player.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
Education and Experience

This position requires the following minimum qualifications:

National Lifeguard (NL)- previously NLS or Swim Instructor/Examiner from the Lifesaving Society
Standard First Aid (SFA) or Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC)
The following would be considered an asset or may be required to complete:

Lifeguarding experience
WHMIS
Pool Operator Level 1
Swim Instructor Training
Life Saving Instructor (LSI)
Aquatic Fitness Instructor

Independence and Scope of Impact

Decisions and problems are varied and require the incumbent to use judgement and discretion within policy, codes, and/or legislation. Supervision can be consulted in cases where several options are available. The incumbent is expected to work within the parameters of the budget provided, policies, and procedures.

Decisions or actions could result in serious losses of time or resources.

Contacts

Internal – Regular contacts are maintained with the Pool Programmer, Junior and Senior Guards involving the exchange of information, coordination or to consult on operational matters. Occasional contact occurs with other municipal departments, mostly with respect to sharing information and acquiring assistance with finance or resource coordination.

External – Regular contacts are maintained with the general public, community groups, and volunteers involving the exchange of information for planning and delivering programs, services, and events.

Supervisory Responsibilities

A Senior Lifeguard will be appointed when the Lead Lifeguard is not present. If not appointed, Lifeguards do not provide supervision to others.

Working Conditions

The work is performed in the outdoor pool area, office, and front counter area of the Pass Pool. Evening and weekend work will be required.
