Overview
The Ktunaxa Nation Council has an opportunity for Casual Life Skills Worker in Cranbrook BC. Reporting to the Director of our Social Sector, the opportunity is suited for someone who enjoys qualities and contributes to positive outcomes for the Ktunaxanin̓tik as a whole.
This is a Casual position that will be working in our KNC Complex Care house.

The life skills worker will work at the Complex Care Housing location in Cranbrook on the Ktunaxa Nation Territory. The position will provide direct trauma informed supports to individuals in the Ktunaxa Complex Care Housing program that align with the Nation's cultural values and beliefs for health, intellectual, emotional, physical, traditional, and spiritual wellbeing.
The life skills worker will be flexible, organized, and responsive to the needs of complex clients in a low barrier housing within the context of harm reduction and eviction prevention. The position will work collaboratively with Ktunaxa community health providers, families, and leaders to support individuals with complex care needs. The life skills worker may need to collaborate with external community partners such as IHA Health and Mental Health and Substance use services, primary care, police, justice, and various agencies in an extensive network of community partners. All of the collaboration will honour the right to respect, dignity and self-determination.
Responsibilities
Providing culturally safe and relevant support for clients.
Participate in trauma informed risk assessments related to harm reduction, enhanced wellness, and violence risk reduction.
As appropriate, work with other potential supports based on the person and/or family's needs.
Provide direct life skills support to participants in the housing program which may include some basic hospitality services.
Actively participate in wellness team meetings.
Provide information to other team members during shift exchange which may include supportive techniques and hazard risk assessment.
Participate in relevant training
Qualifications
Completion or participation in any relevant safety and wellness training. This may include formal training such as the human service worker diploma or relevant combination of life experience and skills.
General competency in providing trauma informed services and understanding the strengths and possible risks when working with people with complex needs.
Experience and knowledge of decolonizing Mental Wellness Practice.
Two years' recent experience working with diverse clients who have experienced colonial trauma that may also have mental health and substance use issues and social barriers, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Understanding of WorkSafe hazard risk reduction assessment and follow-up
Provide direct mental wellness and substance use support to individuals which included harm reduction.
Provide culturally relevant direct support to clients in the complex housing program with a focus on creating safety.
Ability to promote client-focused support that demonstrates care for clients and families, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns.
Possess good de-escalation skills in a complex housing environment with a focus on self-determination.
Demonstrated ability to work respectfully within the Ktunaxa Nation.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
Basic understanding of Aboriginal wellness
Willingness to learn and increase knowledge.
Ability to work with others effectively; and have strong interpersonal skills
Proven ability to work in a complex housing environment in stressful situations where ongoing risk assessment and hazard reduction is required.
Must possess a valid BC driver's license and reliable vehicle (with business insurance)
Criminal record check (including vulnerable sectors check)
