Flow Cytometry Scientific Technology Platform

Reports to: Flow Cytometry Scientific Technology Platform Lead

This is a full-time, permanent position on Crick Terms and Conditions.

About the role

The Flow Cytometry facility is a Science Technology Platform (STP) that provides a comprehensive flow cytometry service to the Labs at the Francis Crick Institute. This involves operation of cell sorters, training of users on the analytical flow cytometers, maintenance and quality control of all the Lab’s cytometers and assisting researchers with planning, running, analysing and presenting experiments. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with technical expertise in optics and electronics to gain experience in cytometry.

Project

This role will be pivotal in ensuring the maintenance of a world-class flow cytometry service. The facility is used by a majority of Laboratories at the Francis Crick Institute an is active in providing education and training for users and staff. The post reports directly to the Head of the STP.

What you will be doing

This role is part of a team that is expected to support all areas of the Laboratory’s remit.

Specific objectives will include, but not be limited to:
• Provide an operator service for the cell sorters
• Train new users as appropriate in cell analysis and cell sorting
• Prepare and analyse users’ samples as appropriate
• Develop or adapt new flow cytometry methodologies
• Assist researchers with analysis and presentation of data
• Assist management with deadlines and scheduling
• Routine maintenance and quality control of cytometers
• Adherence to Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures

Qualifications, experience and competencies:
• Degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences
• Ability to troubleshoot and work under pressure
• The ability to work without supervision
• The ability to work as part of a team
• Demonstratable trouble-shooting skills
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with a proactive and positive attitude.

Desirable

Qualifications, experience and competencies:
• Practical experience flow cytometry analysis
• Practical experience in cell sorting
• Practical experience in data analysis using flow cytometry data analysis packages
• IT skills
• Experience of teaching to small and large groups
• Experience in writing SOPs
• Previous laboratory experience, vocational or relevant academic training
