Position Overview
Banh Mi Boy is looking to hire a Kitchen Hand / Cook with prior kitchen experience and a strong understanding of food preparation, kitchen operations, and food safety standards.
Banh Mi Boy is a Vietnamese bánh mì and noodle shop located in Calgary, Alberta, specializing in fresh breads, house-made broths, marinated proteins, and vermicelli bowls.
Reporting directly to the Kitchen Lead / Operations Manager, the Kitchen Hand / Cook is responsible for supporting daily food preparation, broth and protein cooking, and maintaining a clean, efficient back-of-house environment. This role is primarily kitchen-based, with POS use required only in rare situations.
This position may be part-time or full-time, paid $15/hour and tips. The ideal candidate must have prior kitchen experience, a valid Food Handlers Certification, and demonstrate strong organization, reliability, and attention to cleanliness.
Job Responsibilities
Food Prep & Cooking
Prep and marinate meats (pork, chicken, beef) following house recipes.
Assist in preparing broths, soups, stocks, and aromatics.
Cook and portion ingredients for bánh mì, vermicelli bowls, and rice dishes.
Assemble vermicelli bowls and other dishes during service.
Maintain portion control and consistency of food items.
Kitchen Operations
Follow all food safety and sanitation standards at all times.
Keep prep areas, cutting stations, and kitchen equipment clean and organized.
Restock ingredients and communicate low inventory items to the team.
Assist with opening, closing, and daily cleaning procedures.
Maintain an efficient and safe work environment.
POS Use (Only If Needed)
Operate the POS system only when needed to support the team.
No ongoing customer service duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Valid Food Handlers Certification — must provide proof before starting.
Prior kitchen experience required (minimum 6 months as prep cook, line cook, or similar).
Knowledge of basic food prep techniques (cutting, portioning, etc).
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
Strong focus on cleanliness, organization, and food safety.
Able to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Able to lift up to ~25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
ASSETS (Preferred but Not Required)
Vietnamese language skills strongly recommended
Experience in Vietnamese or Asian cuisine.
Experience preparing meats, broths, or cold toppings.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Experience
Minimum 6 months kitchen experience required.
Experience with broth making, marinating, grilling, or assembling bowls is an asset.
