Job Description

New Zealand Police is working with the community to make New Zealanders be safe and feel safe. With over 13,000 staff, we provide policing services 24 hours a day, every day. We operate by land, sea and air, manage over 860,000 emergency calls a year and are always actively preventing crime and crashes.

We're working towards specific goals and targets that highlight our intent to work collaboratively with iwi and communities, other government sectors and business partners to deliver `Our Business' and achieve long-term change.

About us

Te Tari Pureke - Firearms Safety Authority is New Zealand's Firearms Regulator. Our Vision is to ensure the possession and use of firearms in Aotearoa is the safest in the world.

To achieve this, Te Tari Pureke delivers four core functions: effectively implementing the firearms licensing systems; managing the Firearms Registry; educating people to enable compliance with their legislative responsibilities; and promoting the safe possession and lawful use of firearms.

We are committed to fostering a culture of safe and responsible firearms use, gun ownership and awareness by working collaboratively with the firearms community, our stakeholders, and fellow agencies.

The Regulatory Intelligence Team helps Te Tari Pureke and the wider firearms regulatory system to see risk and opportunity early, ensuring decisions are targeted, fair, and proportionate. We translate information into intelligence that supports effective regulatory action across licensing, compliance, investigations, and system stewardship. Our work includes scanning the environment for emerging risks, profiling individuals and behaviours of concern, diagnosing system pressures, and connecting insights across the Authority and partner agencies.

This role sits within a small, high performing team that is maturing quickly and plays a pivotal part in strengthening New Zealand's firearms regulatory system during a time of significant legislative and organisational change.

About the role

We are seeking an Intelligence Support Officer to support the delivery of core intelligence functions.

You will play a critical role in the early stages of the intelligence cycle; helping us maintain situational awareness of the firearms environment, surface early signals of harm, and generate insights that support responsive and targeted regulatory action.

This is an excellent development opportunity for someone looking to grow in the intelligence profession within a regulatory environment, gain exposure to intelligence tradecraft, and contribute to improving the safety and wellbeing of communities across Aotearoa.

Key Deliverables:

Scan and review information relevant to the firearms system to identify signals, trends, and early indicators of risk or non-compliance.
Triage and assess incoming leads relating to firearms licence holders, endorsements, groups of concern, or potential regulatory breaches.
Support the production of intelligence products, including profiles, scans, diagnostic assessments, and environmental reporting.
Maintain and update intelligence systems and workflows, including tasking records, lead management, and information holdings.
Contribute to the continuous monitoring system, helping maintain a dynamic picture of where risk is emerging across the firearms landscape.
Support regulatory partners by coordinating responses to information requests and enabling consistent flows of intelligence across the Authority and with Police Intelligence.
Assist with the identification of unknowns, gaps, and opportunities to strengthen the function's understanding of the firearms regulatory system.
What you'll bring:

Whilst we are looking for skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the role, we also place high importance on your state of mind, the alignment of your values with ours, your ability to contribute to and build high performing teams, and the way that you lead yourself or others.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to provide clear and concise briefings to a range of audiences
Manage competing priorities to maintain quality of work under strict timeframes
Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within teams and with stakeholders
Be naturally inquisitive and able to apply critical thinking and analytical tools to provide insight and foresight to a range of complex problems and issues.
