INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT - ISS



Qualifications:


High school diploma with a successful passing grade on the Para Pro exam or two-year degree, or 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university
Excellent interpersonal skills
Prior work with children
Knowledge of computers
Preferably Bi-lingual communication skills
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Reports To: Principal


Job Goal


To provide a supervised and structured environment for students assigned to the in-school suspension program within the school. Position works with classroom teachers to coordinate the academic activities of suspended students and provides assistance to students in completing the assigned work. Position monitors students and maintains a safe and orderly environment within the in-school suspension classroom.

Performance Responsibilities


Enforces adherence to established rules and regulations of the in-school suspension program and creates an effective climate for learning.
Communicates appropriate behavior, school rules, and regulations to students in the program; and explains to students the reasons for suspension and its impact on their education.
Maintains daily attendance and other records of students assigned to the program.
Guides and encourages students to develop a positive attitude toward learning.
Serves as a liaison between the classroom teacher and students assigned to the program to obtain and return the student’s daily classwork and homework.
Assists students assigned to the program with completing their regular classroom assignments.
Assigns additional work if the student completes their regular classroom assignments.
Emails teachers 24 hours in advance for work requests (if possible) for all students assigned to the room.
Monitors students who have been assigned to in-school suspension and reviews student progress.
Escorts students during break/lunch periods and monitors hallways.
Facilitates and arranges delivery of student lunches when necessary.
Models nondiscriminatory practices and appropriate behaviors in all activities.
Refers any additional behavioral problems to Administration.
Reports the effectiveness of the program to the school administrative staff and makes suggestions for improvement.

Demonstrate a high level of initiative in job performance

Terms of Employment:


182 days per school year; salary and work year to be established by the Board.


Evaluation:


Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
