The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a GIS Analyst position. This Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The position is part of an ongoing cluster of projects. It requires knowledge and experience of GIS, RS, spatial data management, and statistical modelling. It further requires the ability to use Esri GIS products and to write and use scripts in R and Python.

Interest or experience with health, environmental, and urban geography are welcome assets.
The work is exclusively executed through a computer, i.e., it does not involve a field component. Further, most of the work does not require physical access to UoC facilities, provided a connection to UofC software.

There is no fixed schedule, as the work can be conducted on one's time; however, attendance (can be remotely) to weekly meetings is required (schedule can be adjusted) and interaction with other team members is highly encouraged (this can take place remotely).

The candidate is expected to support the research team in developing research projects involving health, environmental, and urban geography. They will conduct spatial statistical analyses of geospatial data, using GIS software. They will write and run scripts in R and Python. They will produce maps and other cartographic products. They will report to Dr. Stefania Bertazzon (project leader) and her collaborators (PI and co-PIs) and work closely with other team members.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Undertake specified activities (e.g., data handling, analysis, and model development) to ensure the successful completion of the project within the stated deadlines;
Write and maintain efficient scripts for each task, as directed by the team leader.
Verify and validate results using appropriate statistical methods.
Submit detailed analytical results, including indices, inferential tests, as well as maps and diagrams (where appropriate) to support statistical results.
Discuss results with the PI and other project partners and team members.
Attend meetings and conference calls as required.
Inform promptly the PI of any unexpected result or concern arising during the execution of work.
Maintain a detailed log of the tasks requested and performed, of any arising issue, additional analyses and potential concerns. The log must include appropriate sketches, tables, maps, etc., or links/references to them.
Be prepared to submit the above log upon request.

They are expected to report weekly to the project leader and to inform them of any circumstance that may interfere with their ability to execute the work. They are expected to work independently to perform their tasks, and to seek advice from the project leader or other team members, as appropriate.
For example, in conducting spatial data analysis, they are expected to obtain reliable results, and to provide details as to parameters and other details of the analysis. They are required to provide written documentation, including text, table, and maps. They are expected to participate in manuscript/report writing throughout the whole publication process, i.e., submission, revisions, editing.

Qualifications / Requirements:

The minimum qualification is a BSc in Geography, Geomatics Engineering or related disciplines, which include GIT (Geographical information Technology) diploma or equivalent qualification. A masters degree in the above disciplines, including MGIS (Masters of Geographical information Science) or equivalent is highly preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge and practical skills in applying GIS, remote sensing, and statistical modelling.

A firm knowledge and experience with R statistical package, Python programming, and ArcGIS pro.
