About the Role
These newly created roles are offered as 6 or 12 month blocks in Medicine, Geriatrics, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Anaesthetics and Emergency.
As a Generalist Registrar, you will be involved in caring for ward patients who have been admitted, admitting new patients, and performing day stay procedures with appropriate supervision and training e.g. chest drains, lumbar punctures and ascitic procedures etc.
There is a strong expectation of teaching in our department. You will be expected to be present for teaching and to provide teaching.
Within your run, you will be part of a team including a Consultant/SMO and junior RMOs. The high SMO to RMO ratio within a smaller hospital means high levels of contact with SMOs and opportunities to assist in theatre, learn a range of procedures (including minor surgical/orthopaedic procedures, airway management and vascular line placement) and do outpatient clinics. We have a well-structured medical education program, and you will be involved in teaching and supervising junior doctors. On the General Practice run you will experience the benefits of working and living in the Marlborough community and can engage in formal GP, Rural hospital medicine and urgent care training. Your hospital rotations are accredited to form part of GP and Rural medicine training.
As these are newly created roles, we will involve you in developing the registrar program to ensure safe, effective patient care and good training and supervision.
This is a permanent full-time role. The working hours are 8.00AM to 5.00PM daily with long days 4.00PM to 10.00PM. Night shifts will be 10.00PM to 8.00AM. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are 8.00AM to 8.00PM.
Anaesthetic SHO
This role offers an introduction into anaesthesia and a fantastic way to try the speciality and develop your clinical skills and knowledge. You will work closely with a small team of 8 specialist anaesthetists, always under direct supervision. There will be opportunities to have hands on experience with the whole spectrum of anaesthesia including - General, Neuroaxial and Regional anaesthesia including preoperative assessments and post op care.

This registrar would be a part of a team of 2 consultants and 1 house officer, taking part in daily ward rounds, ward-based procedures, family meetings, rehabilitation MDTs and involvement in the orthogeriatric service. There will be the opportunity for weekly outpatient clinics under consultant supervision, and regular education sessions including structured journal club, weekly grand round and opportunities to teach students and other junior doctors.
General medical Job
This registrar would be part of the general medical team of 2 consultants and 1 house officer, with daily ward rounds and acute take 2 days per week. There are opportunities to perform ward-based procedures with and without consultant supervision. You will be responsible for assisting the house officers with ward management and workflow, as well as a weekly outpatient clinic with consultant supervision. You will take part in regular structures education with journal clubs, grand rounds and teaching of other junior doctors and medical students.
Orthopaedics
Registrars will have a range of opportunities and responsibilities. This will include regular attendance in the operating theatre for both planned and acute procedures; supervised clinics and building up to also providing independent fracture clinics, and support for house officers. Contribution to research, audit and quality improvement projects is expected. The successful applicant will benefit from the support of a friendly SMO team who have a strong focus on training and career progression and can expect to undertake a substantial amount of supervised operat
