ABOUT YOU:
You are an adaptable, driven, and highly organised lawyer looking to take the next step in your career as a leader within the sports industry. You have a background in law, with an interest in sport and experience in supporting operational, commercial and strategic initiatives.
You have worked in a fast-paced environment for at least 7 years, demonstrating excellent leadership, project management, communication and technical legal skills. You are passionate about empowering positive change in sport and enjoy executing impactful strategies, supporting clients, providing pragmatic legal advice, negotiating outcomes, establishing effective compliance workflows and implementing effective governance frameworks.
You are detail-oriented yet have a strategic mindset. You thrive in a collaborative environment and are motivated to contribute to the growth and success of SAPA and its clients.
ROLE OBJECTIVES:
1. To lead the legal, integrity and regulatory function of SAPA and contribute to the strategic planning and decision making as a valued member of the Leadership Team.
2. To oversee the effective and efficient service delivery of legal, regulatory and integrity support and services to SAPA clients.
3. To provide and facilitate smooth day-to-day legal and company secretarial support for SAPA’s internal business operations.
4. To enhance the brand awareness of SAPA within the Australia sporting sector through networking and business development.
5. To identify new legal, regulatory and integrity business opportunities for SAPA.
6. To oversee the effective operation of the legal and integrity team including managing the team and assessing resourcing allocation and prioritisation.
7. To enhance SAPA’s internal processes and systems to facilitate efficiency and best practice service delivery.
8. To uphold and promote SAPA’s vision, values, and strategic objectives.
+. To foster meaningful relationships with SAPA clients, partners, and stakeholders.
Specifically, your role will primarily include:
Legal:
Managing the effective delivery of legal services for SAPA clients across commercial, sponsorship, corporate / corporate governance, property, intellectual property, licensing, employment, and dispute resolution.
Negotiating of major agreements for SAPA clients such as commercial partnerships, collective bargaining, broadcast and service provider agreements.
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating various legal agreements including player contracts, player loans and transfer agreements, sponsorship, club participation licenses and collective bargaining agreements
Preparing various corporate documentation for clients including shareholder agreements, constitutions, share transfers, resolutions and notices.
Drafting and negotiating key legal agreements on behalf of SAPA.
Managing SAPA’s key contracts register.
Providing support to SAPA’s Company Secretary and the Directors as required.
Regulatory:
Managing the effective delivery of regulatory support for SAPA clients across regulations, disciplinary, tribunals and appeals, risk management and compliance.
Drafting various regulations, rules and policies for clients.
Managing the ongoing review and update of clients’ regulations, rules and policies.
Oversee the delivery of effective advice and services to clients pursuant to applicable regulations, rules and policies including disciplinary breaches.
Advising on various disciplinary, tribunal and appeal matters.
Integrity:
Managing the effective delivery of integrity support for SAPA clients across member protection, child safeguarding, tribunals, mediations and general complaints.
Overseeing the effective operation of SAPA’s integrity engagements including alignment to operating procedures and service standards.
Overseeing and/or managing key integrity investigations.
Reviewing and enhancing SAPA’s integrity related internal systems and operating procedures.
Networking Business Development:
Actively build brand awareness for SAPA by cultivating key relationships within the Australian sporting sector by attending conferences, events and similar networking opportunities.
Identifying and pursuing opportunities to increase the scope and volume of engagements with existing SAPA clients.
Identifying and cultivating relationships, and ultimately securing engagements with new sporting clients for SAPA.
Ensuring retention of SAPA’s existing legal, regulatory and integrity clients.
Projects:
Managing key legal and integrity projects including undertaking regulation reviews, completing due diligence processes, developing investment Information Memorandums, and undertaking complex legal negotiations such as collective bargaining and broadcast rights.
Assisting on non-legal strategic or commercial projects as required.
Leadership and Stakeholder Management:
Effectively leading key client engagements including attending client meetings and providing regular client reports to maximise client engagement and retention.
Ensuring regular communication with key stakeholders.
Leading, managing and supporting SAPA’s legal and integrity team (currently 3 staff).
Overseeing the effective implementation of relevant actions in SAPA’s strategy and operational plan.
Contributing as a member of SAPA’s Leadership Team.
