The Opportunity

Are you currently studying towards a qualification in Environmental Health and looking to gain valuable practical experience in the field?

Join our supportive Community Health team, where you’ll work alongside experienced Environmental Health Officers and engage with community stakeholders to help ensure Perth remains a safe, healthy and vibrant place to live, work and visit.

As an Environmental Health Assistant, you will provide operational support to the Community Health team, assisting with compliance activities and contributing to positive environmental health outcomes and best-practice standards.

Reporting to the Health Operations Lead within the Community Safety and Amenity team, you will:

Undertake regular water sampling at aquatic facilities in accordance with relevant legislation and requirements.
Inspect aquatic facilities and skin penetration establishments to assess compliance.
Conduct environmental water and food sampling programs.
Participate in food business and other environmental health inspections alongside qualified Environmental Health Officers.
Support the team with a range of operational and compliance activities, gaining valuable practical experience alongside your studies.
About You

To succeed in this role, you will:

Be currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) or an equivalent approved qualification. Applicants must have successfully completed their first year of study.
Have developing knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Local Government Act, Food Act, Environmental Protection Act, Public Health Act and applicable local laws.
Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage with stakeholders, negotiate and assist in resolving issues.
Be keen to develop your practical skills and build your experience in environmental health within a local government setting.
Please note: To be eligible for this position, applicants must be undertaking an approved university qualification leading to accreditation as an Environmental Health Officer. This position is not suitable for students studying Environmental Management or Environmental Science.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work for us, you will need to demonstrate:

A right to work in Australia (e.g. a birth certificate, current passport or current visa)
A current ‘C’ class Australian drivers licence
Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
A satisfactory National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months).
