This role will ideally suit salespeople who have experience selling into key sectors and can quickly apply their existing network and/or sales skills to good effect. Alternatively it will also suit enthusiastic quick learners who are seeking a role that provides them with both freedom and rewards for performing well.
About the role
This is a hybrid role that involves building a book of customers and selling retail energy products, which depending on the size of the customer's energy bills, will save them hundreds to hundreds of thousands(!) of dollars per annum. Over time the role may expand to selling a range of other energy-related products (e.g. hardware).
We will:
offer training and education into our products,
provide guidance and oversight,
provide sales support,
provide sales software,
provide freedom of action, and
listen to your experience and feedback.
We expect you to be:
enthusiastic and take the initiative to generate leads,
convincing and close deals with customers,
ethical and work within regulations,
supportive and able to help prevent and resolve client issues,
positive even if clients are rude or difficult,
willing and able to meet your clients where they are.
Requirements
It will help to have strong mathematical and science proficiency but you do not need to be an expert in energy to perform this role. We can teach you the fundamentals and you will only need a basic proficiency with numbers and software to do the job well. If the software ever breaks we can provide Excel spreadsheets that act as a backup so you can perform bill comparisons.
You can apply your own touch during sales. We do not mind if you take a personal approach, a technical approach, or whatever works best for you. But you must be an honest salesperson who aims to get better outcomes for our clients and company.
Ultimately your first task will be to collect energy bills to review, with the goal of converting the sale. If you want to apply for this job collect one (1) electricity bill for us to discuss during training. It doesn't matter if it's a friend or family member's bill, or a residential bill or a small business bill, just show us that you're willing and able to collect a bill.
Over the long-term we will incentivise you to keep your customers happy. You maintaining a good relationship with clients will help us to maintain the quality of our service to them, and you will earn passive income based on the quality of the customer.
Desirable traits
It is desirable if you:
have existing clients in key industries,
have experience in outbound sales,
have confidence to take up performance-based remuneration, and
are based close to metro or regional population centres.
Key industries include businesses in the manufacturing and light industry, agricultural and food production, viticulture and wine making, medical and dental and allied health, education and childcare, retail food and hospitality (e.g. bakeries and cafes), retail, and property management sectors will be particularly desirable. Energy is a low margin, high volume business so customers who consume large volumes of energy will be the best to pursue. Think water pumps, water heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and other industrial equipment.
You do not need to serve all of these customer types at once. If you have a niche that you can serve well, that will be considered valuable. Alternatively if you do not have an existing vertical it will help to be able to relate with small business owners who are often too busy managing staff to optimise their energy costs. If they can trust you they may act on the basis of that relationship alone.
Outbound sales experience is inclusive of business development, telesales, field sales, and email-based sales. If you can show that you know how to generate leads that you can convert, that will be considered valuable.
Confidence to take up performance-based remuneration will be seen as a positive signal that you expect to perform well. We expect our people to need some time and support to learn to do their best, but those who are already confident will improve their chances of being hired.
Being based close to metro or regional population centres is not necessary but beneficial from the perspective that it will increase your accessible market. On the other hand you are welcome and expected to travel to wherever the customers are, so you can also live remotely.
Alternatives
This is a role for employees, however, we will also consider contracting salespeople on pure commission-based arrangements. If you believe this would suit you please also contact us.
