Overview:
For more than a century, Thwing-Albert Instrument Company has designed and manufactured testing machines for measuring the physical properties of a range of materials, such as adhesives, paper, paper tissue, packaging, plastics, nonwovens, textiles and foils. Research laboratories, quality control departments and academia worldwide have come to rely on our testing instrumentation to accurately measure key physical attributes to ensure stable performance and quality.
SUMMARY – Responsible for the research, design, selection, development, test, documentation and support of the electronic components, products and systems in Thwing-Albert’s past, current and future instruments. May also do significant amounts of programming and configuration of these devices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Cooperate with the entire engineering team.
· Interface with Marketing, Sales and Service to define, review or revise specifications, functions and applications of new and existing products.
· Interface with other departments as needed during a new product design , product manufacturing and support of past products.
· Maintaining the electronic components, circuits and systems in past and current instruments.
· Design electronic circuits and systems to read and condition a variety of physical property data (force, distance, speed, temperature, etc.) from measurement devices (Load Cells, LVDT’s, Encoders, Proximity Sensors, Thermocouples, etc.) and drive motion devices (AC/DC motors, servos, solenoids, etc.). Most designs include microcontrollers with embedded programming. Designs include communication circuits (I2C, SPI, serial, USB, parallel, Ethernet, etc.) that interact between hardware devices and/or with PC Windows or DOS applications.
· Configure and/or program digital devices (ROM’s EPROMS, FLASH, FPGAs, PLDs, etc.) using a variety of PC-based programming tools.
· Ensure that instruments meet all marked or published specifications and safety standards. This may include the submission of products to certification agencies (UL, IEEE, ISA, etc.).
· Design test apparatus and equipment, determine procedures for testing products and direct engineering support personnel in fabrication of these apparatuses and equipment. Use Data Acquisition software to analyze test data.
· Train sales and field service personnel on new designs
