The Role
We are seeking two highly motivated science and technology leaders with a passion for delivering innovative and valued outcomes to Defence in the Aerodynamics and the Maritime Mining Countermeasures Systems groups. The Group Leader will guide and inspire their staff to push the frontiers of science and technology, work with the Science Technology Capability (STC) experts at a conceptual level to create new scientific insights, and work with DSTG’s delivery stakeholders to transition these insights into Defence capability.
The Aerodynamics STC maintains Australia’s leading subject matter expertise in the application of computational and experimental aerodynamics and flight mechanics principles to Defence platforms.
The Maritime Mining Countermeasures Systems STC provides sovereign expertise on sea mines, how they operate and the specific vessel signatures that they target, as well as sea mine countermeasures systems. A particular expertise within the STC is the magnetic, corrosion related magnetic and electric signatures of Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Vessels.
Group Leaders will:
Be accountable for leading a team, planning and managing allocated resources, setting work area priorities, managing workflows, developing strategies and evaluating business outcomes.
Work with DSTG stakeholders to determine the most appropriate work plans for the application of resources and scientific development to meet Defence requirements, oversee the execution of these plans and provide advice to senior management and stakeholders.
Commit to the enhancement of capabilities, information, knowledge and the transition of staff skills to meet project needs.
Draw upon expertise in a specialised field of science and have a broad understanding of the domain knowledge to lead and undertake research activities.
Develop and maintain a team culture within their STC that promotes the clear communication of goals and objectives, mutual support among the team members and accountability for outcomes.

Our Ideal Candidate

An international reputation for excellence in a field relevant to the STC and have extensive experience, awareness and knowledge across a broad range of science that can be applied to Defence.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including to convey complex information and concepts to a broad spectrum of audiences including military and civilian Defence personnel, government departments and agencies, industry, academia and other stakeholders.
A record of cultivating a productive workplace culture that leads to high-impact ST outcomes in an environment of complexity and changing priorities. Candidate should be committed to creating an environment where their diverse team can grow and thrive whilst achieving the organisation’s mission.
Experience in, or aptitude for, understanding client priorities and achieving outcomes that meet customer needs.
