About Us

The Nova Scotia Museum is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens. As well, we oversee the maintenance of more than 210 buildings, four floating vessels and nine locomotives. Our 28 incredible sites, together, tell the story of this province.

About Our Opportunity

This is an opportunity for a young aspiring museum professional from an equity-seeking group to gain valuable experience in museum curation, interpretation, education and research, and to enhance their knowledge and understanding of Nova Scotia’s natural and cultural heritage.

The YCW intern will gain practical work experience and develop marketable skills in collections care, research, curation, interpretation, education and communication. They will work alongside and receive on-the-job training and coaching by core Museum staff educated and trained in curation and collections management including the Curator of Mi’kmaw Cultural Heritage, Collections Data Registrar, Senior Conservator and Manager of Interpretation.

Additionally, through the intern’s work on the Reducing Barriers to Education Among Former Youth in Care in Atlantic Canada study, the intern will make connections amongst academics in Canada, and be exposed to methods of sharing research results publicly.

Primary Accountabilities

Assist the Curator of Mi’kmaw Cultural Heritage in inventorying the basket collection.
The candidate will research cultural belongings and add to the catalogue record for these objects.
The Intern will develop interpretive products, such as social media and blog posts highlighting objects in the collection.
The Intern will assist the curator in creating access to cultural belongings for community members and researchers.
The Intern will work with partners to curate an interpretive product as part of the Reducing Barriers to Education Among Former Youth in Care in Atlantic Canada study.
Qualifications and Experience

A demonstrated interest and knowledge of Nova Scotia’s cultural history, with a focus on Mi’kmaq Cultural Heritage. A willingness to work with and present information to the public and stakeholders. Research experience and experience handling collections in a museum study are assets. Excellent communication skills and must perform in a culture of service excellence. Knowledge of word processing (Word,) and the internet required. Knowledge and experience with databases are an asset. Successful applicants must submit to a Police Record Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check with satisfactory results.

The position is designated for Indigenous students.

Additional Information

You must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (www.youngcanadaworks.gc.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program.


The successful candidate must pass satisfactory criminal record and child abuse registry documentation. The filling of this position is contingent upon receiving funding.


This is a designated position for Indigenous individuals. Candidates should self-identify when making an application
