Full job description
Gain exposure across a range of programs within the environmental sector.
Permanent Full-Time position.
Be at the forefront of making an active, positive contribution to Auckland’s natural environment.
Enjoy the benefits of working in a flexible, supportive and high performing work environment.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

It’s an exciting time for our Environmental Services Department as we’ve invested in a large suite of programmes ranging from pest animal and plant control, kauri dieback, to increasing community-led conservation action.

We’re looking for a Conservation Advisor, to join our team. Our team works collaboratively with mana whenua, community groups and private landowners to increase biodiversity and reduce the impacts of invasive pests.
You will be leading integrated indigenous ecosystem and species management projects, including invasive species initiatives. You will provide advice and support to elected members, mana whenua, landowners, and community conservation groups, to protect, restore and enhance Auckland's natural environment, and support our unique rural and urban landscape.

This is a hybrid position (With a maximum of 2 days a week of working from home)

He kōrero mōu: About you

You will be leading and supporting interesting and challenging environmental projects that need creative and collaborative solutions. You’ll have previous experience in providing biodiversity and biosecurity advice and delivery. You can deliver high-quality project management, focused on protecting indigenous biodiversity, including reducing the impact of pest species, in both rural and urban environments.

A proven influencer and natural collaborator, confident in working in partnerships with mana whenua and community groups in providing technical advice to protect the natural environment. We will value your strong relationship building skills as you will be working with the wider council family, elected members, community groups, iwi and landowners to achieve shared environmental outcomes, as well as engaging the public and utilising behaviour change approaches.
You’ll hold a qualification in ecology, biodiversity, biosecurity, or a related discipline and/or equivalent work experience in ecosystem management.

You will enjoy being part of our expert, committed and capable Environmental Services team. Our priority is providing the best possible working environment for our staff which includes a focus on employee wellbeing and career progression opportunities. Joining Environmental Services will provide you with the opportunity to work across the whole council family, with our mana whenua partners, community groups, private landowners, schools, non-government organisations and central government to support best practice conservation projects and outcomes.

This is a great opportunity to be part of an exciting programme of work which will improve Auckland’s precious natural environment for current and future generations.

You’ll also work in a flexible and supportive work environment and will have access to a range of fantastic Auckland Council benefits, including discounted Leisure Centre membership and a range of other partnership discounts.

Take the next step in your career and embrace this fantastic opportunity to leave your legacy on Auckland!

Please note:

A full driver's license is a requirement.
This role is deemed safety-sensitive and in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
Qualification Checks will be conducted along with other relevant pre-employment checks required for employment with Auckland Council.
