Job: 1496189 Full-Time Permanent Canberra, ACT $71,776 - $89,934 (Based on Experience)
This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact:
As a valued member of our ACT Justice Support Program, you’ll play a key role in working collaboratively with legal and community stakeholders to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, with the aim of reducing incarceration rates in the ACT. This is achieved by providing culturally appropriate support, assisting clients to obtain and comply with bail, and facilitating access to justice support programs and services. Each day, you will:
Identify eligible clients and support their participation in the Ngurrambai Bail Support and Front Up programs
Deliver program services including court support, bail support, case management, and after-hours assistance
Provide culturally appropriate support to clients and their families throughout the bail process
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, legal representatives, and key stakeholders across agencies
Assist clients to obtain and meet bail conditions through planning, transport, and ongoing case management support
Monitor, record, and report program outcomes while promoting services and staying informed on justice issues
Your Story & Strengths:
With respect and pride, you’ll walk alongside community, with a deep understanding of cultural, social, and historical needs. You’re committed to standing up for justice, supporting mob with care, and helping reduce cultural load and bring these values and strengths:
Be a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, recognised by your community
Apply sound judgement and cultural awareness to deliver respectful, appropriate support to Aboriginal clients and communities
Demonstrate strong knowledge of the criminal justice system, including bail processes and court procedures
Use effective communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills to support clients in complex situations
Show resilience and professionalism when working with challenging behaviours and high-pressure environments
Work effectively both independently and within interdisciplinary teams, with strong analytical, time management, and organisational skills
Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital tools, with the ability to travel as required; relevant qualifications in community justice or related fields are desirable
Our Journey Together
At ALS, you can discover a fulfilling career that truly makes an impact in the community. We also offer our staff a range of generous benefits including:
Not-for-profit salary packaging, which can increase your take-home pay by up to $15,900 per year, reducing your tax burden and keeping more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break
Career and professional development opportunities
Caring for Community & You
To protect the communities we serve, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or have the capacity to obtain a current and valid Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) check for this role.
ALS is committed to equal opportunity and cultural safety in recruitment for all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support throughout the recruitment process, please contact our Talent Team at talent@alsnswact.org.au - we will work with you to ensure an accessible and supportive experience.
