About the Position

The Child Focused Educator provides child‑centred counselling, education, and consultation services to support children and families experiencing separation, relationship conflict, and parenting challenges.

As a Child Focused Educator, your responsibilities will include:

Deliver child‑focused information sessions and child inclusive practice using approved frameworks to support separating families and promote children’s best interests.
Support the ongoing implementation, review, and improvement of child‑focused program materials to ensure relevance and quality.
Work collaboratively with Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners to support mediation processes and coordinated service delivery for children and families.
Ensure children’s voices are respectfully heard and their perspectives appropriately incorporated into dispute resolution, escalating concerns when required.
Provide information, support, and referrals to clients in line with program guidelines and organisational procedures.
Develop and assist in the delivery of group, community, and educational programs responsive to the needs of separating parents and families.
Facilitate community education on child development, including ages and stages, to support positive outcomes for children and young people.
Identify and report emerging client needs, service gaps, and opportunities for service improvement.
Travel regularly across regional locations to deliver services and programs.
Maintain accurate client records, contribute to reporting and evaluation, and meet funding and organisational compliance requirements.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

An appropriate degree or post graduate qualification in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology or Psychotherapy or a Human Service-related area that includes child development, attachment, and trauma.
Hold or be prepared to complete a Child Inclusive Mediation and Counselling Program within six months of employment.
Eligibility for membership with relevant professional body (e.g. Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Counselling Association) where applicable.
Knowledge and understanding of the Family Law Act 1975 and amendments and how this informs approaches to working with separating families.
Experience in working with children, adolescents and their families in mental health including in a post-separation context.
Relevant knowledge of child development that demonstrates understanding of ages and stages, attachment and impact of trauma.
Experience in therapeutic counselling with knowledge of a range of counselling theories and interventions.
Sound knowledge of issues around family relationships and separation, parental alienation, domestic and family violence, suicidal ideation, peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem, drug and/or ******* abuse, mental health, and mental illness.
Demonstrated ability to work with and be sensitive to the differing needs of people from various cultural groups.
Knowledge of issues affecting the Aboriginal community which threatens and impacts on family wellbeing.
High level of communication and negotiation skills, both verbally and in writing.
Effective organisational and time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative manner.
Demonstrated ability to work in a highly confidential manner.
High level of ability in the use of Microsoft Office and Information Technology.
Requirements of the role:

Hold (or willingness to obtain) a current DHS Working With Children Check *
Hold (or a willingness to obtain) a National Criminal History Record Check (Police Check) *
Hold a current South Australian Driver’s License (minimum Provisional License)
