Job Description
Lead, mentor and support the registrars and house officers of Starship Child Health as our Chief Resident for 2027
Leadership position fixed-term for 12 months

About the role
The Chief Resident manage and organise teaching programmes for ward house officers and medical registrars, ensure quality and safety improvement and manage operational and performance-related issues. The role takes ownership of tasks related to recruitment, rosters and leave and is a key contributor to a variety of initiatives, with the opportunity to improve patient experience and outcomes.
The Chief Resident contributes to actualising equity through Te Tiriti o Waitangi and fosters working environments to promote Pae Ora for Māori whānau and engage with the Tama Ariki Ora, Māori Health team at Starship to provide education on equity and Te Tiriti in Action.
The Chief Residents clinical commitments are designed to meet training requirements and cover both inpatient and outpatient services, there is also the opportunity to conduct your own child health related clinical research. This exciting position enables clinicians to gain invaluable experience across a diverse range of clinical and non-clinical areas, providing a premium training opportunity for working as a consultant paediatrician.

Starship Child Health is a dedicated paediatric healthcare service and major teaching centre, providing family centred care to neonates, children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific. Starship is a part of Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora and is the only comprehensive childrens hospital in New Zealand serving a population of approximately 1 million children. Auckland City Hospital is NZs largest public tertiary hospital which has strong ties with University of Auckland and provides extensive teaching and training opportunities.

Are highly motivated, organised, mature and enjoy a challenge
Have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how to apply it in the health setting

Bring strong communication skills and the ability to lead a team of junior clinicians
This is a 12-month fixed term opportunity with guaranteed return to the Auckland advanced training scheme if this is required. The role will commence early 2027 and interviews will take place in July this year.
