Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role/Service

We are looking to recruit an exceptional, forward thinking nurse leader to professionally lead, create vision and drive strategic nursing priorities across our Te Uru Mātai Matengau/Cancer Screening, Treatment and Support directorate at Midcentral. The directorate is responsible for the breast and bowel screening programmes at MidCentral, supportive care as related to cancer patients and treatment, and the Regional Cancer Treatment Service.

The Regional Cancer Treatment Service (RCTS) is one of six (public) regional cancer centres in New Zealand. It is a tertiary level service and comprises of Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology, Radiation Oncology, Hospital Palliative Care, Clinical Trials and one inpatient ward. Each speciality is supported by management, administration and treatment teams that are based in the tertiary site in Palmerston North, but have close working relationships with the Regions that the RCTS serves. The RCTS catchment includes the populations of MidCentral, Hawke's Bay, Whanganui, Wairarapa, and Taranaki Districts. The regional population is approximately 600,000 with 65 percent of the workload generated from the regions outside of MidCentral.

Senior medical officers (SMOs) within the RCTS regularly travel to visiting outpatient clinics at all the regions. Systemic therapy units are located in Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki Districts, with a systemic therapy facility soon to be operational in Whanganui, such that patients can be treated closer to home where possible. Whilst currently, all radiation therapy is delivered at the tertiary site in Palmerston North, regional linear accelerators are planned for Taranaki by the end of this year and expected in Hawke's Bay 2027/2028.
