π©Ί Job Profile of Emergency Medicine in India
Core Responsibilities
β’ Immediate patient care: Diagnose and treat acute medical and surgical emergencies such as trauma, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, poisoning, and strokes.
β’ Stabilization & resuscitation: Provide rapid interventions to stabilize critically ill patients.
β’ Leadership in ED: Supervise junior doctors, nurses, and paramedics; ensure smooth patient flow in the Emergency Department.
β’ Coordination: Collaborate with other specialties (ICU, surgery, cardiology, radiology) for seamless patient management.
β’ Disaster management: Prepare and lead emergency response protocols during mass casualty incidents.
β’ Education & training: Mentor medical staff, participate in clinical teaching, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
Skills Required
β’ Clinical agility: Ability to make life-saving decisions within seconds.
β’ Composure under pressure: Managing chaotic, high-stakes environments.
β’ Multidisciplinary knowledge: Expertise across cardiology, trauma, toxicology, pediatrics, and critical care.
β’ Communication & leadership: Directing teams and reassuring patients/families.
β’ Protocol adherence: Following national/international standards (AERB, HTM, NFPA, ISO, etc.) for compliance and safety.
Qualifications & Pathways
β’ MD/DNB in Emergency Medicine or MRCEM
