Job Summary

The Department of Health, Aging and Society in the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the discipline of Social Gerontology. Applicants must possess a PhD in a related discipline at the time of application, and a developing program of research.

We are interested in applicants whose expertise would add to existing areas of departmental teaching and research strength, but particularly in scholars who take a ‘critical perspective’ to ‘the twenty-first century aging experience’. The former might involve an academic commitment to questioning norms and power structures, highlighting disadvantage and oppression, participating in community-engaged research and an appreciation of theory. The latter might involve attention to new materialities, new technologies, developments in social policy, and evolving forms of social, family and institutional relationships.

The Department of Health, Aging Society is an interdisciplinary unit, and our faculty members are engaged in collaborative research across a number of disciplines, faculties, departments, and other units at McMaster. Within the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department is closely linked to the Gilbrea Centre for Studies on Aging, and at McMaster more generally, our faculty members are important participants in the McMaster Institute for Aging Research (MIRA).

Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in research and teaching, and have a commitment to service. We invite candidates to highlight how they could add to the department’s innovations, such as in experiential education and community engagement, with the aim of enhancing the student experience and research opportunities.

Particular requirements include a strong record of peer-reviewed publications for the candidate’s career-stage, and the ability to maintain an independent research program. The successful candidate will have a track record or strong potential in teaching and supervision at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in academic service.
How to apply

Applicants should submit the following documents electronically as PDFs
• Cover letter
• Curriculum Vitae
• Statement of research
• Teaching dossier

Academic reference letters are not required at the time of application, but applicants should provide the names of three referees who may be subsequently contacted.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. To comply with the Government of Canada’s reporting requirements, the University is obliged to gather information about applicants’ status as either Permanent Residents of Canada or Canadian citizens.
