The Ministry for the Environment is seeking to appoint an external member to its Audit and Risk Committee for a three-year term, to fill a vacancy. The Committee is an independent advisory group that provides advice and governance to the Chief Executive and the Ministry on all aspects of the Ministry's organisational risk and opportunity management, audit, internal control frameworks and strategic direction.
The Committee meets four times a year in the Ministry's Wellington office and online. Committee members are paid in accordance with the Government's Fees Framework, as set out in Cabinet Circular CO (22) 2. The current rate for members is $1,1+5 a day.
Committee members are not expected to be experts in all areas of the Ministry's activities and operations but must be suitably experienced to be able to review and distil information and provide sound advice. They are expected to play an active part in discussions about our core accountability documents, audit results, performance and associated issues, risks, and opportunities.
Key competencies and expertise
Applicants should have some, or all, of the following:
Governance in the public and/or private sector
A strong understanding of the machinery of government and the core requirements of government agencies
Ability to provide independent, confident and sound advice on a range of issues and matters, particularly in Compliance, Health and Safety and Risk Management
A demonstrated approach to participation through inquiry, based on engagement and healthy scepticism
Experience and skill at testing risk appetite, identifying risks and opportunities
Financial management knowledge and experience
Knowledge of, and interest in, Aotearoa New Zealand's key environmental issues and options
An understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand's economy and the linkages with good environmental management
