About This Opportunity

We are currently seeking volunteer book club facilitators for Stony Mountain Institution in Winnipeg, MB.

Each month, volunteer facilitators lead engaging discussions about carefully selected works of fiction and non-fiction. Conversations often explore themes such as resilience, identity, forgiveness, hope, and personal responsibility, encouraging participants to reflect on their own experiences and consider new perspectives. Through literature, volunteers help create a respectful and supportive environment where meaningful change can begin.

Time Commitment
• Approximately 2 hours per month for the book club meeting
• Additional time to read the selected book and prepare discussion questions
• Minimum commitment of two years

Responsibilities

As a book club facilitator, you will:
• Co-facilitate monthly book club discussions with another volunteer.
• Foster respectful, inclusive, and thought-provoking conversations.
• Encourage participation from all group members.
• Help create a safe, welcoming environment where diverse perspectives are valued.
• Work collaboratively with institutional staff and fellow volunteers.
• Attend orientation and complete all required security procedures before entering the institution.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:
• A university education or equivalent life and professional experience.
• The ability to pass a criminal record check and obtain Correctional Service Canada security clearance.
• Strong communication and active listening skills.
• Emotional maturity, reliability, and sound judgment.
• A genuine interest in literature and meaningful discussion.

Ideal Candidates

We welcome volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. Experience in education, facilitation, counseling, social work, rehabilitation, libraries, or related fields is an asset but not required.

Successful facilitators are
• Passionate about reading and lifelong learning.
• Comfortable leading group discussions.
• Open-minded, respectful, and non-judgmental.
• Dependable and committed to making a long-term impact.
• At least 21 years of age.

Please note that, because of the significant commitment required, we generally do not accept student volunteers.
