The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking a motivated, responsive and energetic Trades Assistant and Handyman to join our Facilities team in this full-time, non-ongoing position. This opportunity is available at the APS4 or APS5 level. The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level based on their level of skills and experience.

The Trades Assistant and Handyman plays a key role in assisting the Non-Collections Assets Coordinator and/or Facilities team with various tasks on site, including but not limited to ad hoc cleaning or minor repairs (I.E; painting, carpentry) Co-ordinate the Museum’s non-collection assets such as exhibition materials, showcases and other valuable materials in the Museum’s possession. Provide the principal reference point for the acceptance and receipt of deliveries to the Museum of non-collection materials including bulk stationery items, publications, PR materials etc. in addition to the above this position is also to ensure the management and coordination of offsite warehouse.
Please note: This recruitment process is intended to fill both current and future vacancies. While the position on offer is non-ongoing, a merit pool of suitable applicants may be established to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions within the next 18 months.
Key Accountabilities
Under general direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:
Meeting deadlines associated with direction from non-collection assets coordinator and/or facilities team member.
Tasks Preparation and clean up making sure necessary equipment and materials are ready to be used.
Assisting Facilities Team: Provide support to tradespeople by preparing materials, tools, and equipment for various tasks and projects.
Site Preparation and Cleanup: Ensure work sites are prepared for tasks by setting up necessary equipment and materials, and maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the project.
Material Handling: Safely transport and handle materials, tools, and equipment to and from work sites.
Basic Maintenance and Repairs: Perform basic maintenance and repair tasks under the guidance of tradespeople, including minor fixes and adjustments.
Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of materials used, tasks completed, and any issues encountered, and report these to supervisors as needed.
Customer Interaction: Communicate effectively with clients and customers, addressing any questions or concerns they may have in a professional manner.
Tool and Equipment Management: Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained, stored, and accounted for.
Selection Criteria
Knowledge and understanding of general facilities management building principles and procedures.
An understanding of work health and safety practices within a facilities management context.
Effective communication skills with ability to maintain positive relationships.
Knowledge of Asset Management and storage.
Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to use power tools, with strong knowledge of problem-solving skills and attention detail.
Qualifications and/or relevant experience required
Mandatory:
Valid Driver’s Licence.
Desirable:
Experience organising logistics for storage and transport.
Experience coordinating the acceptance and receipt of deliveries of non-collection materials in a museum setting.
Experience assisting Building Services team in providing operational support in a museum setting.
Experience using asset accounting systems, Microsoft word and excel.
Valid Forklift Licence.
Valid MR Licence.
LR license (minimum).
EWP license(Elevated Work Platform).
First Aid Qualified.
