Thalassaemia/ Red Cell Day Nurse

The Red Cell Day Unit/Thalassaemia Staff Nurse will play a key role in providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to patients attending the Red Cell and Thalassaemia Day Unit. The post holder will deliver holistic care to individuals with chronic haematological conditions, including sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, and other disorders requiring regular transfusions and infusion therapies such as crizanlizumab and intravenous iron.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for cannulation, phlebotomy, the safe administration and monitoring of infusions and blood transfusions, and ensuring the safe discharge of patients. They will support the delivery of a high-quality, patient-centred service in line with Trust policies, national safety standards, and NMC professional codes.
The role requires a proactive and organised nurse who can work both independently and collaboratively to prioritise workloads, support junior colleagues and students, and contribute to the continuous improvement of patient care. The post holder will be expected to uphold the Trust’s values, maintain accurate clinical documentation, and participate in professional development and service innovation within the Day Care setting.
Responsibilities
• Deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate nursing care to patients attending the Red Cell and Thalassaemia Day Units.
• Undertake venepuncture and cannulation in accordance with Trust guidelines and professional standards.
• Administer blood products and infusions safely and in line with BSH, SHOT, and Trust transfusion policies.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans to meet patients’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs.
• Accurately record patient observations, recognise and respond promptly to any changes or adverse reactions, and elevate concerns appropriately.
• Ensure all patients are safely discharged with appropriate advice and follow-up instructions.
• Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with NMC standards and Trust information governance policies.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control standards and promote a safe working environment for patients and staff.
• Take responsibility for personal professional development, mandatory training, and participation in clinical supervision and appraisal.
• Contribute to the smooth running of the Day Unit, including stock control, equipment checks, and resource management, ensuring any faults or issues are promptly reported.
• Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives, and colleagues, demonstrating empathy, respect, and cultural awareness.
