Here's your chance to lead innovative freshwater, coastal, and marine science in a region that spans from the untouched wilds of Fiordland to the unique biodiversity of Stewart Island. Environment Southland is now seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Team Leader - Aquatic Ecosystems to join our Science team.
This is more than a science role, it's an opportunity to shape the region's environmental future while supporting a passionate, multidisciplinary team. Your scientific insight, big-picture thinking, and strong people leadership will be key to helping us deliver robust, applied science that supports both environmental and community wellbeing.
About the role
As the Team Leader - Aquatic Ecosystems, you'll step into a dynamic and collaborative role at the intersection of freshwater, coastal, and marine science. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you'll lead from both a strategic and scientific perspective helping to grow capability, build strong relationships, and guide the delivery of meaningful science that supports real-world outcomes.
You'll be someone who can translate complex information clearly, connect the dots across systems, and spot opportunities for innovative, impactful research. Your broad scientific expertise, particularly in aquatic environments, will allow you to steer the team through a wide range of challenges from the straightforward to the complex. Just as importantly, you'll play a hands-on role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering an environment of curiosity, growth, and collaboration.
This is a fixed term role to cover parental leave, ending 2 July 2027
We're looking for someone with:
A post-graduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in a relevant science discipline
At least * years' experience in aquatic science (freshwater, coastal, or marine)
Proven leadership experience in people and project management
A systems-thinking approach and the ability to translate science into real-world outcomes
