Job description
Tax Staff Accountant

Location: Boston, MA

Work Arrangement: Hybrid

Employment Type: Full-Time

A growing mid-sized CPA firm in Boston is looking for a Tax Staff Accountant to join its tax practice. This is a great opportunity for an early-career accounting professional who wants hands-on experience, direct exposure to clients, and the chance to learn from experienced CPAs.

Unlike larger firms where junior professionals can become highly specialized early in their careers, you'll have the opportunity to work across a varied client base. Engagements include privately held businesses, partnerships, entrepreneurs, high-net-worth individuals, trusts, and family-owned companies.

What You'll Do

As a Tax Staff Accountant, you'll work alongside senior accountants, managers, and partners on tax compliance and planning assignments throughout the year.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Prepare federal and state income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, and trusts.
• Assist with quarterly estimates, extensions, and year-end tax planning.
• Organize and analyse client financial information used in preparing tax returns.
• Prepare clear and accurate tax workpapers and supporting schedules.
• Research routine federal and state tax questions.
• Assist senior team members with more complex tax assignments and special projects.
• Communicate with clients to obtain information and resolve questions during engagements.
• Support responses to federal and state tax notices.
• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure assignments are completed within established deadlines.
• Stay informed of changes in tax legislation through firm training and continuing professional education.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues during busy periods to ensure clients receive timely service.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in candidates who want to develop a long-term career in public accounting and are keen to build their technical tax knowledge.

Ideally, you'll have:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
• 0-2 years of accounting or tax experience; public accounting experience or a relevant internship is beneficial.
• Eligibility to sit for the CPA exam or active progress toward CPA licensure.
• Basic understanding of federal and state taxation.
• Strong Excel and general Microsoft Office skills.
• Previous exposure to professional tax or accounting software is helpful but not essential.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and an ability to produce accurate work.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to organise multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

What You Can Expect

You'll join a firm large enough to provide exposure to sophisticated clients and challenging tax work, while remaining small enough for you to work directly with experienced managers and partners.

The firm provides structured training and ongoing support as you develop from Staff Accountant toward Senior and Manager-level responsibilities.

Benefits include:
• Competitive base salary.
• Annual performance and salary reviews.
• CPA exam and licensing support.
• Continuing professional education.
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
• 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution.
• Paid time off and company holidays.
• Hybrid working flexibility.
• Professional development and mentoring.
• Clear progression opportunities within the tax practice.

We're looking for someone who is curious, dependable, and willing to learn. You don't need to arrive knowing everything—the expectation is that you'll build your technical knowledge through real client work, training, and support from experienced professionals.

If you're looking to begin or continue your public accounting career with a Boston CPA firm where you'll receive meaningful responsibility and room to progress, we'd like to hear from you.
